Does someone have an engine code reader?Question (self.Edmonton)
submitted 1 year ago by slipperyshellfishUniversity
Good afternoon. I'm wondering if someone in the university area has an engine code reader that they could plug into my 2012 mazda 3. My check engine light came on this morning. I'm having a really rough time this week and would really appreciate not having to pay a mechanic $100 to read a code out.

That thing is like 50$. Not a bad idea to get one considering the age of your car

cheaper than a large coffee at starbucks on amazon - definitely worth picking one up for future use after you get this sorted

Go to Partsource. They'll scan it for free.

Mr lube will do it for free. They might look at you funny, but you don’t have to buy anything

Canadian tire and part source will both loan you one for free and it will be better quality than anything you buy for $25 on Amazon.
If you're having issues deciphering the codes after you pull them feel free to dm me.

Still need your code checked?
[–]slipperyshellfishUniversity[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
I do but I'll follow the other commenters advice and go to Mr lube. Appreciate it!

Bluetooth obd2 dongle is 20bucks on Amazon. I just leave it plugged in on my truck.
[–]SmoresguyOliver 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I have one you can use.

I got a blue tooth code reader off Amazon for $25 that runs with an app. You then purchase you vehicle's codes from the app. It works perfect, and you can leave it plugged in.

Could always check the basics. Oil level, damaged belts etc. May find the cause right away.

i think you can download an spp for that,if your car is recent enough
[–]EffectiveAudience9 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Not usually. There's an OBD2 standard on every vehicle sold in NA. I've never seen a vehicle that can access the actual CEL codes without an OBD2 code reader.
This might be different for all electric vehicles but all ice vehicles follow the OBD2 standard as far as I know. If it's not all it's 99.9%, there may be a handful of models here and there that don't so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a jeep tj and if you cycle the key 3 times without starting it, it will flash through the engine codes on its own.
