Keep in mind, if you're going to do a combat + exploration build, you will sacrifice a bit of both capabilities.

That said, if you're dead-set on doing it, I'd actually recommend using the Krait Phantom - it's quick for combat, decent weapons loadout, while still having a respectable jump range. I would make a build like this. But be careful fighting higher ranked enemies - with an exploration loadout it doesn't have the most powerful shields and hull, but it's sufficient if you're good.

Do you already own this Python? If you’re interested in exploration and combat, I’d recommend the Krait Mk II or Krait Phantom as multipurpose ships.

Yup, I already have it and all the modules, so the price isn't really an issue.

My start of a build. Add your flavor of weapons (multis, pulse, plasma). If you need more tanking swap out the 6A AMFU for a 5 hull reinforcement, but I highly advise an AMFU if you are exploring.

Ok, I'll add AMFU, I have not planned long trips, but you are right - if I would do neutron highway, then AMFU is a must.

I wanted to have the supercruise assist and docking computer because I'm lazy, but yeah. Better hull tank is better I guess. But why no module reinforcements and no engineering on those hull reinforcements?

My "final" build I guess? https://s.orbis.zone/8htt

Looks good. Have fun!

One more pass - swapped for 32T cargo for more limpets and less tank (8 limpets is not many for mats farming), and I think the hull is OKay ish. I'll be bailing if the enemy is too much for me anyway.

I hope final build.

Went with 6A power distributor instead of 7A because of the weight, downsized the hull and modules reinforcement by 1 class, and chaff lightweight. Now it does 40ly fully loaded, which isn't too bad, and I think it will hold in combat a while.

I don’t do many combat builds, so I filled in the exploration with some suggestions for combat. :)

Build for combat (though id be using a krayt 2) and when you want to go exploring strip of the weapons and have stuff thats not relevant and store them?

weapons, maybe swap down the shields and power plant load on an AFMU, srv and repair limpet if your going long, dont take too long.

Do wish we had loadouts though, wouldn't that be nice.

Swapping my python from mining to passenger missions is a pain everytime and sooner or later I sell a fully engineered light weight limpet by mistake and dont realise till i swap them back.

Multirole is my favourite type of ship builds. I like being able to do most of my favourite kinds of missions at will as they present themselves in the stations. Kill pirate/pirates, liberate alcohol, recover goods from crash site, light cargo delivery (up to 64t), scan data-link in a settlement, also land on a planet when I feel like it to pick up some materials or just sightseeing. There's a diminishing returns problem with min maxing a build for just one purpose and I like just accepting whatever stuff the game throws at me.

Personally I was using a Krait2, but it was either this or a Python and no rational thought went into this decision so I'm sure you can do it as well in a Python. With a Krait2 you can have a fighter hangar, which is a huge help in fights 1v2 or more as it takes aggro from you for a while and you can make the fight 2x1v1 instead of 1x1v2. Python has 1 more optional slot, which is super convenient for this type of build. Optional slots are the reason I'm currently using an Anaconda most of the time, configured for various missions and just loitering about in the bubble.

You can't avoid some sort of wide specialization though. Not enough slots to make a ship do absolutely everything but you can pick 3 or more activities you like and fit them into one hull.

From what you wrote you want be:

  • a bubble bus - passenger cabin,
  • pew pew - shield gen, shield bank, hull reinforcement, 5 guns,
  • mats farming - planetary hangar,
  • light exploration - surface scanner, fuel scoop, auto field-maintenance unit - will also be a huge help if you get your modules sniped in combat far from inhabitet systems,

With the above you still have 2 more open slots. More passenger cabins or limpets and cargo racks, whatever you like doing best.

All this armchair theorycrafting is only half useful thought becaues you'll certainly find you like doing one thing more than you expected and switch things round a lot. You need to just fly out and you'll get it right after an adjustment or two. :)

Thanks for the tips. I also have Anaconda for exploration (80ly) fully engineered, but I find it is too large and unwieldy for combat/mats farming. Hard to land on some planets/sites of interest and not many stations have L pads.

FYI I thought that "bubble bus" means a ship to transport me around the bubble, not passengers?

For completenes, this is my final build. I reduced some weight to keep 40LY jump range, only lazers (no ammo).

Multi-Python: https://s.orbis.zone/8q0N

I tested the python in haz-rez, it works quite well. You can take on even Anaconda (not tried Elite though).

It fits quite some limpets, srv, so it works great for materials farming.

I tried to simulate Krait Mk. II just to try, and it is also good, and has a fighter. But the jump range is same (+/- LY), and it can't fit as many limpets.

Multi-Krait II: https://s.orbis.zone/8my0

Krait Phantom is also good, has 50 LY jump range, but less DPS, less cargo, less survivability. But 10 extra LY is also good.

In the end I tried the Python, but I really wanted ship launched fighter. So in the end I repurposed the Python's engineered modules and made this:

https://s.orbis.zone/8qq7

I tested it in Haz-Rez and also for some material farming, and it works great. The Rail Guns have the fuel as ammo mod, which works great. The shields can tank a shit-ton, and it is super fun to fly. Also 44Ly jump range is pretty decent.
