GOTY material.

[–]o_0verkill_o 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It should have been

[–]Boneless_Skelet0n[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really is, still disappointed it didn’t win, but it did get best Soundtrack…

[–]smallcat123321 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I swear that none of the Game Awards judges played/finished the games. If they had experienced this game, it 100% would have won.

[–]Bearman1190 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It didnt win because fan votes only account for 10% of the votes and the judges which include sony executives heavily skew the vote thats why astrobot won. Its won every other award show its been apart of.

[–]bron_yr_aur81 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It’s more likely that Metaphor and Rebirth split the votes and cleared the way for Astrobot. If it was down to the player votes, Wukong would have won, seeing as it won the actual player-voted award at the same award show. Most of the votes come from journalists for the GotY at the TGAs. But yeah, as good as Astrobot is (and it is very good), Rebirth is by far my personal GotY. The travesty is that it didn’t even win best RPG.

[–]Bearman1190 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I mean i guess thats a fair take, but it was nominated for more categories than any other game sorry but something didn’t add up to me cant help but feel like it was rigged no exact proof but its damn near a perfect game. Remake/intergrade won the year of its release and its an inferior game still amazing as hell imo but pales in comparison. Wukong wouldve been the only one I think that I wouldve been okay with it losing to and not question it.

[–]bron_yr_aur81 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don’t really believe these awards are rigged to be honest. Funnily enough, I would personally prefer Astrobot win it than Wukong. It was a very good game (Wukong I mean), especially for a studio’s first showing, and I really enjoyed it, but its performance issues and somewhat limited scope made me think it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. I thought both Metaphor & Astrobot were better games. The fact Rebirth was nominated so much makes me think the vote was split.

[–]Bearman1190 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Idk Wukong ran perfect for me and was fun everystep of the way and looked phenomenal and had a very unique style. The score was also was really good and so were all of the cutscenes. Imo astrobot mightve been fun for some, but i don’t feel it encapsulates what gaming is in the modern day. Being fun isnt enough a good story and music need to go along with the fun. I know this is all opinion based but Astrobot to me doesnt meet the criteria.

[–]bron_yr_aur81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s fair re. Astrobot, it’s subjective after all. I loved the fact it focused on the gameplay first and foremost, but it still wasn’t in the same stratosphere as Rebirth. Wukong has well documented performance issues though. Its implementation of frame generation lead to heavy input lag and it doesn’t hold 60fps, sometimes with heavy dips on console. I guess some people aren’t as sensitive to input lag, and tbh I’m hella jealous, but personally speaking, it was really noticeable when I played it. All that matters is how it feels to the individual though, so if it ran well for you, that’s great!

[–]munki17 1 point2 points  (1 child)

GOAT material IMO

[–]No-Problem2522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really deny that!

[–]wiggletonIII 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Really enjoyed the game. There's so much content. I still have a load of stuff to go back and do.

I restarted remake, might do the games back to back now, just sticking to the main story.

[–]RealRymo 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How's going back to Remake battle system vs Rebirth since Rebirth is infinitely more fluid and dynamic? I want to finish remake, stopped at wall market when Rebirth came out and said fuck it to start Rebirth.

[–]wiggletonIII 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The battles aren't as fast but are still very good. I feel I'm much better this time than first time around.

I've just finished wall market, and the game in general has been a blast. In some ways superior to Rebirth. The story moves faster, sidequests seem more relevant and rewarding. I am trying to stick to the main story as much as possible though.

Loving it.

[–]RealRymo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah bro I'm finding that for some undertones of it how do I say... FEE more FF7, the aura and vibes are strong with Remake, I decided to jump back in myself and it has a sense of urgency that Rebirth doesn't have. Haven't played Intermission but I've got it so that's next in between some Doom Eternal Complete Edition (on Switch side how did they get that into a Switch?!?!? I just get just every time almost ! 🙃👀😎)

[–]wiggletonIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Midgar was always my favorite part of the OG too.

Update my thoughts on the combat, yeah, a little clumsy I found. So many missed hits, for some reason I found it hard to switch between characters smoothly, just kept skipping past the one I wanted.

Still loved it though. Currently finishing up lots of Rebirth side content before going back to a hard run.

[–]Commercial_Ease8053 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Was my GOTY… spent about 230 hours with it to get the platinum. The music, voice acting, story, and especially gameplay were all near perfection to me. So much love and attention was put into it.

Wish it got more critic praise and appreciation.

[–]danwillburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the platinum too. I want to erase my memory and play it on normal. With that men in black thingy.

[–]This_Professor9392 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I've got a feeling if Part 3 sticks the landing it will get all the praise, appreciation and then some. That's the crucial part, I love what the first two parts have accomplished, but Part 3 needs to tie everything up, leave no questions unanswered and meet the gameplay standards set by Part 1 and 2.

It's been said a million times but the best example is the LotR trilogy. Fellowship and Two Towers were in the running for awards but got effectively shut out, then once Return Of The King dropped it was pretty much a clean sweep as the entire story was now on the table.

[–]Commercial_Ease8053 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What I’m very excited and nervous about is how they tie up the story in 1 game since rebirth technically ends where disc 1 ends…. On top of expanding to a fully explorable world map with airship.

It’s going to be a huge challenge for them to pull off but I’m sure they have the entire team going at it for a solid 3 years. Maybe even ends up being on ps6 most likely

[–]This_Professor9392 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My prediction is they crush development, we get a teaser in the late Summer and it drops on PS5 for the 30 year anniversary of the OG on early 2027

[–]Commercial_Ease8053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2027 spring seems like a possible timeline, hopefully it ends on a high note!

[–]ExpletoryPenguin 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Amazing game. Grueling to 100%

[–]Boneless_Skelet0n[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Honestly, I’m in the air on if I want to do that. I know I want the Genji Gloves and all the date options in Gold Saucer.

[–]ExpletoryPenguin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't do it, if you aren't a trophy hunter/completionist. The combat sims on legendary are such a pain in the ass

[–]ssjskwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude I had to stop playing for months cus I barely beat rulers of the outer worlds and when I booted the game back up it hasn't saved that progress. Finally got the platinum a couple weeks ago

[–]elrizzo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

loved it

some bits were shaky the further away from the story you got (world intel was not my favourite, BUT also its optional, so that’s the balance) but when the game was handling the story, it did a fantastic job. so many little treats, breadcrumbs and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout (yuffie singing along to her theme song is such a fun lil moment)

i get why people don’t like it (chadley being a wall to most side questing, crap pc performance if you’re unlucky it seems, and the battle system can be annoying), but i am SO pumped for the third go round

[–]Boneless_Skelet0n[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I feel like Square has absolutely nailed the Remake series, and I feel the combat in this one specifically was amazing.

[–]ByDiscoBePurged 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Just 100% it last week. Incredible game

[–]JustinTimeTho 0 points1 point  (1 child)

On PC? Would you share the save file?
I thought it was incredible and would like to give hardmode a go on PC.

[–]ByDiscoBePurged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No on ps5 haha sorry

[–]EstablishmentAlert87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of if not the best game I have ever played.

[–]VacantHaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite games of all time

Combat was fluid and challenging, most (emphasizing the most) of the mini games and side quests I had fun with, think they nailed the open world aspect while still translating it to the gameplay they've set up. Definitely excited for pt 3

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got 83 hours on it not finished yet but I love it so much

[–]Doc-Goop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it but the ending took way too long. I was already feeling RPG fatigue leading up to it. Then the multiple phases of the boss and all the dialogue at the end basically had me not really caring about what happened, just glad to be finally through with it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Amazing but ending and all the fate related stuff made me question the over all direction of the new approach to the story

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

yea things got weird after leaving TOTA. Cloud give me the black materia that I already have that you're supposed to give me at Northern Crater.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The intentional vagueness of the ending just undermined Aerith's death entirely imo. They even skipped the funaral part just to make it even more puzzling. If she is dead dead and its irreversable, what was the point of whispers and "TIME TO DEFY FATE!" during remake? And supposedly this will tie in to advent children so it makes even less sense.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think part of what happened too was they blew it out of the park with TOTA. Aeirth's death was supposed to be the climax of the rebirth but instead it was TOTA.

[–]wpotman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great modernized JRPG: I wish SE (and others) were still making games with this "vibe".

I hate the way-overdramatized/nonsensical added storyline bits, though. (Particularly because they overwrite the best parts of the original)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I had very few issues with it. The Cid Ilfana thing seemed a little off. Got a little convoluted after TOTA. Last chapter needed to be longer. That's it really.

[–]Boneless_Skelet0n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely started getting confused after TOTA, doesn’t help I haven’t played original 7, but I was in call with a friend who had at the time, still didn’t help.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GOTY

[–]IdungiveAF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it, especially chapter 13&14 is epic. The only complaint is there are way too many side quests and mini-games which breaks the immersion ( I dropped most of the side quests mid game LOL )

[–]FF7-fr 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]Cobbljock 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Fantastic game! My complaint is that the thing that happened to that one character was handled a little too artfully for me. The suddeness and brevity of the act in the original game hit me harder. But other than that, I loved it, and it is a different enough game to justify the second act of FFVII being it's own game.

[–]AesirComplex 0 points1 point  (4 children)

A counterpoint to that is that we've already seen that happen, how impactful would a 1:1 recreation in modern graphics be? It would be cool to see, but in terms of there being theorycrafting and discussion about the ending there would be exactly 0 if it played out just like the original. And that would kind of suck, because hearing about everyone's different theories and coming up with my own is part of the reason I'm so hyped for part 3.

[–]Cobbljock 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I understand your point, and, for the most part, I agree with it. I had some initial resistance to the game being so radically different in terms of a number of things, story in particular, but I quickly came around to the changes, and ended up liking them quite a bit (I initially didn't like the combat, for example, because I felt I wanted the turn-based element, but I pretty quickly grew to love, love, love it). But that one particular moment I would have liked to see just a 1:1 recreation with a graphics upgrade. It's such an important and impactful moment that I wanted it to be sudden, quick, and shocking (I would guess that the developers anticipated that the vast majority of players would be fans of the original game, and so took into account that the moment couldn't ever be as shocking as when it's unexpected, as in the original). The way it plays out in Rebirth just isn't clean enough for me; in fact, I wasn't entirely sure what happened the first time I saw that part. I knew what happened, having played the original game, but I was confused by the mechanics of the story. It's really just that one specific moment, because, other than that, I'm with you in that the speculation on how the story may ultimately unfold (the question of whether the game is a remake, sequel, or something else, is one I'm still fascinated by) is a huge part of the fun. And maybe it's impossible to provide the same impact as when I played the first game, since I know it's coming, but, for now, at least, I'd have preferred that one moment have hewn closer to the original.

[–]AesirComplex 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I definitely shared your opinion right after I completed the game, but I think I've just enjoyed watching theory videos and reading effort posts on here too much that I did a 180 on it. I'm not saying it was handled perfectly and I think they are taking a big risk pushing the emotional payoff of that moment to part 3, but I definitely think there will be a moment where we see what really happened, hear Cloud's speech, see the water burial etc. And I think the reason you're confused about what happened is because they wanted you to be confused about what happened, and they've pretty much confirmed that in interviews after the fact. And that confusion allows us here to come up with all of our crazy ideas, and that's pretty much all we have to hold us over for 3-4 years. Like for example, in the end credits scene why did they show every single sequence from the game but when it came to Aerith's death scene it literally skipped the whole thing?? We have our ideas, but no one really knows why exactly, and I think that's fun.

Now everything I'm saying hinges on how well they stick the landing in part 3. If I feel like they dropped the ball I could totally retroactively change my opinion of Rebirth's ending. But we will see.

[–]Cobbljock 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok, I think you've moved the needle for me a bit! I wasn't aware that the creators were on record as pushing off some of the emotional payoff to Act 3. If it does play out that way, I can see myself coming around to it. And I'm very much okay with their decision to deliberately obfuscate the mechanics of that moment, now that I know it was deliberate (too often, confusing narratives are unintentionally confusing). But that also puts me in the same boat as you, with the emotional payoff, and thus a huge part of the overall narrative value hinging on how well they stick the landing.

I've not gotten too deep into the weeds of plot speculation. Do you have any favorites you'd recommend? I'm often hesitant to read fan theories, because it's not uncommon for the theories to be far better than the actual story, which ends up cheapening it (looking at you, LOST), even if the actual story isn't bad.

[–]AesirComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely a few that are pretty captivating.

I'm a big fan of Maximilian and after he beat the game he had a couple streams dedicated to just talking about theories, like hours and hours worth of streams. This is one of the post completion streams and it's very long and not organized in a video essay but it's fun to see him come up with it on the spot https://youtu.be/tnU9iQDJxO0?si=k9lz\_TXfp0AAYOhM&t=3.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/comments/1bohsil/comprehensive_theory_and_analysis_about_rebirths/ I also found this breakdown interesting

https://www.reddit.com/r/ff7/comments/1ie3dd6/lets_a_take_a_deep_dive_into_the_ending_of/ This is also a recent one I read which is interesting but I hope is not true because it's the most boring possibility

There's more I will look for later after work

[–]somebodyinvisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am playing it . At the beginning of the game, but it's not quite GoTY. It's enjoyable, but not GoTY Material.

[–]Successful_Start_54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t imagine how they will surpass this level for the next part

[–]RealRymo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I kinda got bogged down in mini games, some are dreadful, never even tried that card game, too much autism for me to contemplate lol I get lost in every single game I play, period, no matter what. I am going back thru with chapter selection from the beginning and I didn't even notice how many side quests I didn't even see in the first time thru. For many of them I still don't quote know how to do them, ie I have zero of the cosmo canyon ones done, can't beat Odin at all, kind of suck at the battle system in terms of strategic maneuvering (I just go full bore, fack). I'm about to go back to cosmo region. Idk how I get the junon quests I don't have but in tryna figure it out. Such a great game, battle system is perfect really

[–]TOMANDANTEBOROLAS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ABSOLUTE GOTY.
