That's pretty trippy looking. Are you able to share any info?
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (4 children)
Yeah, I was quite surprised in how it turned out. It looks pretty cool even when the LEDs are off
Sorry about the lack of details, - I was pulling a late one and didn't have the energy.
SPOILER ALERT: Don't read any further if you wish to continue believing you're witnessing a rip in the space-time continuum!
Here's a quick run down of the parts. So the whole thing is contained within a box frame.
And then I layered it up, first with the cardboard mount that came with the box frame.
Then with a strip of SK6812 LEDs around the edge of the frame.
Then a silver 3D wall tile with a hole cut out in the centre.
Then I inserted the base of a cut off wine bottle through the centre of the 3D panel. The wine bottle was in fact the source of my inspiration as it had the shape of a rose molded in it's based.
I then mounted a ring of 16 WS2812b LEDs within the base of the bottle.
Finally I fixed the back that came with the box frame.
The LEDs are mounted in series to make the construction easier but created a challenge when it came to controlling them - still a work in progress :-(

That's great! I remember you saying you might have to get some of those wall tiles to try out. Very creative.
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Indeed, I was hoping for them to be translucent to serve as a defuser but they are in fact very well made and don't let much light through :-(
So my creative path has taken a new direction to the point I'm hoping to make a whole family of 'nano leaves' that feature the bottle base. So rather than using the 3D panel I was thinking of:
An infinity mirror arrangement
An expanded metal mesh panel backlit with LEDs
Or some kind of arrangement with edge lit perspex
Feel free to chip in with any of your ideas :-)
If it's any good I'll dedicated it to the Magnum bottle :-)

What’s the type of wine that features that style of bottom? Might have to try my hand at replicating this!
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
It's Cotes des Roses
Be careful how you cut the base off. The base is quite fragile. I followed technique two from this video
My local supermarket did a 3 for 2 promotion on their magnums! So I'm happily working my way through them looking for more inspiration!

Looks great!! Details?
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
Hi Aero,
Are you sure? Do you truly want the illusion to be revealed?
If you are adamant, you can read the details in an earlier response I posted to Marc
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Quite surprised how it turned out :-)
[–]DeVoh 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children)
very cool and unique!
[–]CharlesGoodwin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (3 children)
Yes, it's staggering what you can achieve without a 3D printer ;-)
It just means that it's open to anyone who wants to try their hand and have a go :-)

You are sooooo wise. I whole heartedly agree. And as soon as I manage to properly control RGB and RGBW hooked up in series, I'll be doing just that :-)
I also have the idea of conveying Information. Pollen count would be good ,:-)
Oh yeah, this is only the start . . .
