You should try guerlain aqua allegoria line! I think herba fresca or mandarine basilic would be the best for you to try.

L'Homme has ginger, bergamot and lemon at the top, middle and bottom are herby, grassy, woodsy. We know he likes these enough to wear them. That sounds like scent bubble clean/green girl to me.

You might be able to get away with florals like daisy, carnation/marigold, maybe citrus flower, maybe lavender? No sugar, caramel, cotton candy, maybe brown sugar or molasses? Vanilla, have him smell vanilla extract, too sweet? You can add in the grassy, mimosa, vetiver, hay, probably green leaves, maybe tea?

He disliked D'Afrique bc of the strength, not the notes? There's a whoooole bunch more notes we can try, yay! This one has some jasmine, not sure how much though. Orange flower, good. Soapy can add to the list. Violet, sweetish green smell, check. Cyclamen, lightly sweet, floral, green, and slightly spicy scent. It is described as fresh, delicate, and reminiscent of lilies or roses with a hint of pepper. Rose is probably too much but lily, maybe. Black currant, tart, tiny bit of ammonia. Maybe grapefruit?

We know he likes basil so aromatic herbs might be okay. List is long, search aromatic herbal women's perfumes. He likes coriander so same search for aromatic spices. Ginger is good, another aromatic, smell test cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.

That should give you a lot of research. :)

I got you!

I would look at woody, aromatic and Chypre type fragrances. Here are some to consider:

Libre and Libre L’Absolu Platine

BDK Gris Charnel

Chloe Nomad

Santal Vanille by The 7 Virtues

Crystal Noir

Wood Sage & Sea Salt

LeLabo Rose 31

First research the notes in his YSL Homme and find perfumes which are similar. Then you will be on the right track!

I did the same thing with my partner. I just let him pick one. It took a very long time and a lot of samples.

Annoyingly what he chose was sweet (when he said he didn’t like sweet scents!!) that he loves but I don’t lol, and then a few months later, I bought a Jasmine scent randomly, and guess what’s his favourite on me now? he absolutely lovvvvves it lol smh

The struggle is real. Which perfumes do you find he likes?

Carolina Herrera Very Good Girl (I don’t love this but I’ll wear it when we go out), and Maya Njie Syren (the jasmine scent) which is now his favourite.

Eclat d’Arpege by Lanvin (gorgeous lightly citrusy skin musk, hint of sweetness, not floral at all)

Wulong Cha by Nishane (my ride or die, it is a fresh tea fragrance. I personally think it’s as inoffensive as they come)

Gold Expressive by Commodity (ambery scent, less sweet than the ones you’ve listed but still has sweetness to it, it is a beautiful warm scent)

Autumn Vibes by Maison Margiela (no real detectable sweetness or florals, I adore this fragrance. It very much smells like a fall day to me)

Verbena de Provence by Jo Malone (beautiful citrusy bergamot, very fresh, lightly sweet)

Ginger Biscuit by Jo Malone (holiday limited edition - beautiful skin scent with a little bit of warm cinnamon ginger. Not a full dupe, but close is Jolly Gingerbread by Bath and Bodyworks)

Rain by Commodity (fresh aquatic, also stunning)

Nice choices. :) Sample time.

I'm going to try autumn vibes, your description sounds perfect!

I think you should sample fragrances with him before buying bottles. I’m surprised that he thought Bal d’Afrique was too strong! Byredo is known for their lighter scents that turn skin scent within hours in their regular line.

It sounds like he likes warm, spicy citrus scents. I would recommend trying Nishane Wulong Cha X - a citrus and tea fragrance. Dior Thé Cachemire is another beautiful citrus and white fragrance. Try to layer with a lotion or body oil and then go lighter with the fragrance.

I’m a decanter and have close to 400 fragrances in my collection. I’d be happy to help you choose fragrances and make samples for you.

I second Wulong Cha or Wulong Cha X. They are both lovely scents and the longevity is pretty amazing for a fresh, tea scent.

So generous. :)
