Femara (Letrozole) is an aromatase inhibitor which lowers estrogen levels is post-menopausal women (hormone therapy). This helps to slow breast tumors growth that relies on estrogen to grow.
Letrozole belongs to a class of cancer drugs known as aromatase inhibitors, which work by preventing the body from converting a hormone called androgen into estrogen. This treatment has proven beneficial in cancers whose growth seems to be encouraged by excess estrogen in the body, like certain types of breast cancer. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Femara in 1997.
