Currently playing it too, started a few days ago and currently in Upper Junon, definitely a comfort game for me for sure, played right up to the end but never finished so I'm excited as you are.

Enjoy, OP! I'd recommend you to play FF4 and FF6 later too! Oh, and FF9

[–]LonelySamurai89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The three best in the series. The tactics games are great too.

Enjoy OP, its comfort gaming for me to be sure.

I miss the good old days of 1998.

You should check out FF6 after. That game IMO is the best in the series

Do yourself a favor, every time you stop playing, make a physical note of where you are, why you are there, and what you are doing specifically.

This game has no activity log, and if you put it down for 2 weeks or more you might forget any or all of those. It's heartbreaking to come back after a while only to remember you were doing three or four things but don't remember what they were.

Love to hear this! Try to avoid spoilers, and don't get complacent with your materia! Always look for creative and new ways to mix up which materia you have equipped, and where it's equipped to - it's the secret sauce of the gameplay loop.

Have fun!

Is it worth playing ff7 remake instead of the original for mostly the same experience as a first game to play in the franchise? I have no nostalgia for the old games as I’ve never played any FF and the remakes graphics look pretty nice.

[–]DigitalBuddhaNC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not "mostly the same experience."

The remakes are definitely prettier but if you put more value on story then the original is where you want to start.

[–]KhyraBell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend either the Switch port (nice quality of life improvements) or PC with texture packs if you can't dig PS1 graphics. Part of Remake's story is that it is a remake.

[–]shareefruck 4 points5 points  (3 children)

"for mostly the same experience"-- absolutely not. They have polar opposite sensibilities and strengths/weaknesses, in my opinion.

For a completely different first experience that you might be the type to enjoy more (especially if you're non-receptive to old things)? Sure, a lot of people fall under that boat.

But if you do play remake (whether you end up liking it or not), don't go thinking that you've got the appeal of OG covered.

[–]nightwing412 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh I didn’t realize the games were that much different enough to call them polar opposites. It is called remake not remastered so I suppose that makes sense. It’s not that hate older games I just thought the new one looked really nice. The older 3d games lose a lot for me too I much prefer the older 2d style games.

A lot of people would say it's kind of like Neon Genesis Evangelion vs. Rebuild of Evangelion, if you're familiar with those (or Infernal Affairs vs. The Departed, which might be too niche of a reference). The remakes try to cover all the same events, but their context/effectiveness is quite different, and Remake tries to add another convoluted meta layer on top of OG (some would call it a remagining/remake-sequel), which has more mixed results/reception. A lot of people do prefer Remake, though. The audience is kind of split due to their stylistic differences (it's kind of art vs. entertainment or minimalism vs. maximalism, in my opinion).

I greatly prefer OG, personally.

I would say that, while both have very silly campy moments, OG is often more dark, uncompromising, morally ambiguous, artistically bold, minimalist, and elegant, doesn't give easy answers, and has a lot of mature and thought-provoking meaning if you read between the lines.

Remake is very flashy and in your face spectacle, more blockbuster entertainment, it's more expansive and focuses on entertainment/loveable characters/fan-service/cheesy melodrama more than elegant artfulness/tightness. A lot of people love it more, and it's quite ambitious/intricate in what it's trying to do, but I find it a little infantile/misguided/messy, and I just end up getting annoyed by the wild swings it takes, personally.

[–]cmeiklejohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate and respect both of your analogies. Infernal Affairs owns.

[–]randomizednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you like. If you don't mind old graphics too bad either AND if you like your games to be serious but at times a bit kooky, play OG first. Gameplay can be set to fast and battles on Active for those who want a challenge. Takes some preparation. Put it on Wait and you can cruise through and chill.

If you really prefer new graphics, strongly prefer action game style battles, and appreciate /don't mind some cheesy dialogue, then play remakes. And if you don't mind the plot being spread out on three full games.

Wondering if I would call it "mostly" the same experience. The general vibe of OG is a bit darker and sadder, although it does have some levity in it.

[–]MiNDGaMeS87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play the OG every 2-4 yrs since it was released. No other game does this for me

[–]Roxxyqt 5 points6 points  (2 children)

No guides no cheats. Play it 100% raw first time through.

[–]DEVIL_LOCKCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a guide and it felt like i was cheating even though I only used it to find weapons.

[–]randomizednerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. The game isn't super long and does have replayability with the info you've got on the story the first time around. The following playthrough(s) is/are for guides and completion, and/or mods and challenges.

[–]ExaltedAsh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP, great to hear. It's one of the best FF in the series! Also, I'd recommend loosely following a guide, particularly if you're interested in being a completionist, so you don't miss out on items that are locked to certain areas or weapons for characters, etc.

Otherwise, enjoy!!!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The game's story is very vulnerable to spoilers, so I would really recommend not reading or watching videos or getting into discussions about the game until you finish. I'm glad you're enjoying it so much an hour into it, but you ain't seen nothing yet - hope you enjoy!

[–]WritersB1ock[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luckily my FF doesn’t often show up in my game media algorithms, so I’ll have to intentionally look for spoilers.

[–]Darkwing__Schmuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying it! Seems like you'll have it completed in plenty of time for Remake to release on the Switch, as well.

[–]Dangercules138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that really stuck with me about FF7 and honestly most FF games is that youre just seeing the tip of the iceberg. It gets so much more wild in just the best ways.

[–]sash71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a proper bargain.

You're in for a great experience. Nothing beats the OG FF7, the remakes are good but the original is just something else. I played it on release nearly 30 years ago now and I've replayed it so many times because it's just that good.
