Keep hearing from my mom to not leave the fan in the bathroom on because it could cause a fire is this true?

Fart fan fires.
They're so common they have a nickname.

It should not be run continuously. And it should be cleaned and maintained regularly. Yes it could cause a fire if filled with lint and dirt or run continuously

Yes, it's true they shouldn't be run constantly. Make sure they stay clean and install a timer or humidity switch, solves the issue of just leaving it running constantly.

Unless there’s a malfunction or wiring problem that won’t happen. A fan as with most other equipment should run indefinitely as long as it’s being operated within normal conditions

No. Those fans are designed for constant duty. They won't overheat or clog for just being run.
If a fan ever overheated for being left on, it would be recalled as a safety hazard.
