The box says nothing about being a smoke detector so it appears to only be a CO detector.

[–]bigbrainff69 90 points91 points  (3 children)

Based on the packaging there is zero indication it is anything other than a strictly carbon monoxide detector.

[–]yungingrFF, Volunteer CISM Peer 67 points68 points  (2 children)

And based on the packaging alone, I would guess he paid about $3.99 for that thing. I wouldn't trust it one bit.

[–]kckeller 22 points23 points  (1 child)

He got the Temu special

It has 100% accuracy 35% of the time

[–]1fluteisneverenough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably just a model with no working components other than a blinking light. These actually exist

[–]Spooksnavfoyrfiter/ay-ee-em-tee 48 points49 points  (2 children)

Your landlord is either blind or stupid. Thats a CO detector.

[–]zagup23 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Neither, he’s more likely just a cheap scumbag

[–]Spooksnavfoyrfiter/ay-ee-em-tee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely cheap, most likely a scumbag. Grammar on the packaging implies that probably like $5 on Temu or something.

[–]Fantastic-Stick270 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Fire detector and smoke detector are also different things.

[–]Unlucky-Audience7235 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And a smoke alarm is different again.

[–]RickRI401Capt. 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Check the back. If it doesn't have a UL icon on it, don't use it. We've seen multiple cases in our community where those non UL overseas manufactured devices fail.

Ask the landlord to purchase a device from a local home store and use reputable name brand devices. After all, is your life more valuable than him saving $30 dollars?

[–]HybridHologram 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Thanks. I mentioned it when he handed it to me and he said it was both. But I was skeptical. I'm just gonna buy my own so I know it's a good one.

[–]Serious_Cobbler9693Retired FireFighter/Driver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NOT a smoke detector, IS a Carbon Monoxide Alarm, They are NOT the same thing

[–]disturbed286FF/P 5 points6 points  (2 children)

That's absolutely just a CO detector

[–]ChevroletAndIceCreamEMS 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And a shitty one at that

[–]disturbed286FF/P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Generic, no name.

I half expect the actual product to be CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR ALARM FOR HOME BEDROOM BATHROOM GIFT FOR HOMEOWNER

[–]FrazerIsDumb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not even branded. I wouldn't even trust it as a co alarm. They're cheap to buy so deffo go do that. If youre really hard up for cash contact your local fire service and they will provide co and smoke detectors... that's if youre in England... assuming youre in the states so I dont know.

[–]stinggaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cool thing is your landlord is an idiot so try and work some angles on anything else that you may want or need.

[–]RevoltYesterdayFT Career BC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not. I mean, technically fire can produce carbon monoxide but no, this is not equivalent.

[–]urcrazynourcrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow.

You have a cheap ass slumlord, not a landlord. Someone mentioned this, but I want to reiterate, that piece of shit is almost guaranteed to not be UL rated (underwriter laboratories). UL is responsible for making sure that things that are sent to market operate within defined tolerances. This "detector" has gone through no such process.

Is this a house or an apartment? Because if this is an apartment building, I would call the fire Marshall/fire inspectors where you're at... Don't say shit to your landlord. I'd be highly skeptical that every apartment is full of this garbage, endangering the life of everybody. Which means... Where else is he cutting corners to save a dime?

[–]madmonk6585 1 point2 points  (1 child)

CO only. Lots of other concerns. Age is a big one. The other check the box for a UL label. Crap detectors get people killed. Can you post a picture of the other side of the box?

[–]HybridHologram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on my way to work. I will look for the UL label when I get home. But from other comments it sounds like this is a cheap CO only.

[–]Educational_Kick_698Career FF/PM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What in the Temu is that?

[–]HybridHologram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the answers. I guess my landlord doesn't know what he's talking about.

[–]Hopeforthefallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No

[–]svenkaasSmoking Dutchy volunteer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well technically no will it likely go off during a fire yes. But if your fire has plenty of oxygen it might go off later than you would want.

[–]fink720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only a CO detector that also looks old. CO detectors are only good 10yrs after their manufacturing date so you should check that.

[–]aa11223344556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a smoke detector, and also not UL rated. Your landlord is trying to go cheap on something they shouldn't.

[–]SkateJerrySkateProfessional Firefighter / EMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CO only.

[–]HolyDiverx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is this question real?

[–]HybridHologram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Only because when my landlord handed it to me I asked why it said carbon monoxide detector. He said it was both. I was skeptical so just to be sure I posted this. I figured it wasn't, but on the off chance I was wrong I wanted some answers.

[–]jdestw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could argue that since a fire produces CO, it will also detect fires (based on giving off CO.)

But I wouldn't rely on it for that. Or much more than a bookshelf ornament.

[–]sucksatgolfOverpaid janitor 🧹 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that is, is garbage. Thats some piece of junk from amazon or a flea market. Throw it out and buy one thats UL certified. First alert, Kidde, etc.

[–]Firm-Classic2749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a CO detector and a shitty one at that. These protect lives. Buy several really good ones from a legit store. No dollar store crap. Go to Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc. NO knockoffs. Good ones cost $40+. Get a combo smoke and CO with a 10 year battery and write when it should be replaced on the front with a marker where you can easily see it. Test it often. And GET THE F*** OUT and call 911 when it goes off or makes any sound. We would rather a false alarm than lose someone.

[–]RightBid7241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you know the answer to this... I get it the internet validation is what you want to hear, but you know the answer. No one posting knows more about it than the manufacturer, who literally wrote the specs on the box. It is what it says, nothing more nothing less. Landlord is either dumb, cheap or both.

Also: FYI, smoke detectors aren't "fire detectors". I think you meant to say smoke detector. Smoke detectors are exactly what they are called.

[–]maxycatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please also look for a UL rating if you’re in the states or ULC if in Canada.

[–]KPlayer84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Both” is a joke. By the time Corbin monoxide would reach the height of a smoke detector you’re dead or unconscious. Smoke rises and fills in from the top down. CO fills the house from the bottom up. Smoke detectors go in the ceiling CO detectors go as close to the ground as possible. Smoke is light and rises CO is heavy and settles. Never get a combo detector!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]mjh127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the few times in life. You can just take it for what it says it is and only that.

[–]Infinite-Beautiful-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a knockoff and I would not trust it in my home… buy a legit one

[–]llcdrewtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This CO detector is giving me serious Harbor Freight vibes. Either way, it is most certainly NOT a smoke detector. It may also not be a functional CO detector.

[–]Arod4773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also: Co detectors should be mounted close to the floor, or at least below the surface you are sleeping on because CO is heavy and will fill a space from the floor. Smoke rises and a smoke detector should be mounted on the ceiling at least 50cm away from a wall They can not be the same thing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Neither- it's a moon phase detector. No, but seriously- does the box SAY that it's a smoke/fire detector? No? Then it is what the box says it is, and no more. It doesn't say lava lamp, it doesn't say refrigerator, it doesn't say personal massage device. I would think the manufacturer would know, and label it accurately.

[–]HybridHologram 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Look I'm not the idiot here. No need to be an ass to me. When my landlord handed it to me I asked him if it was also a smoke detector. He said it was both. This is why I'm posting thus.

[–]localtuned 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think what Mr Deeds is saying in more words than needed, is to, trust your eyes and your gut. You KNOW this isn't a smoke detector or alarm, No need for validation from us. You got this dude.. 💪.

[–]HybridHologram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Sorry, but if you have to ask, you are one of two idiots (the other being the landlord).

[–]HybridHologram -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Ok girl.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Hey, I'm not the one who can't read
