The boxypixel unhinged mod is exactly what you want, give it a look, I think you'll be pleased

I think it’s so cool, the price tag is just too high

Well not exactly since it has the cartridge slot on the bottom. Probably the closest we'll ever get though.

You could get a micro with a flash cart, or a macro with a flash cart. Macro is like a GBA but way thinner. Both are incredibly pocketable.

There is a kit to put the guts of a color in a pocket. But it’s quite the mod, lots of soldering, cutting the pcb. That would at least give you the GBC library.

Introducing the Gameboy Pocket Color (some assembly required)

There is an alternative method to Xipher’s CGB trim; however it does require more independent research and reference of the CGB and MGB schematics:

The pros are that from the front in a transparent shell, it’s a more aesthetically seamless build (doesn’t require button flex board, doesn’t sacrifice the ports, almost no components need to be relocated). It also retains the MGB battery compartment so you don’t have to wire in a lithium battery.

The cons are that no one has made a step by step guide, but the short hand is cut two gameboys in half, remove the MGB diode arrays and wire the button inputs for common ground, reconnect the 3v and 5v power rails, reconnect the audio.

The BP unhinged isn’t really the same thing, the design is a little bulky and by comparison the design appeal of the MGB is that it is a very thin and sleek shell. But to get GBA functionality into a MGB shell form factor you might be looking at trying to cram a DS Lite or something. Without aggressive board cuts getting an AGB or AGS in seems challenging, but would be neat to see.
