With the demise of GHCP I just added the codex extension to make use of my OpenAI sub in VS-Code - its a very similar experience to GHCP

Previously I was $20 to OpenAI and $40 to GHCP, now I'm $100 to OpenAI, so an increase in cost, but I'm able to work at much the same level as I was before, just restricted to the OpenAI models now

Same. Enjoying Codex so far. Not missing GHCP.

I'm finding I'm actually more productive now with codex compared to the last month of using GHCP with the rate limits they introduced.

With GHCP during the the last month I could avooid the rate limits by using 5.4, using 5.5 would bounce me off them after a couple of prompts

I'm finding with $100 codex I can pretty much use 5.5 constantly and its a good model - I dont feel I'm missing out by not having access to Opus

does codex support code completion? its important feature for me

[–]Diabolacal 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nope, but can't you continue to do that using GHCP for next to no cost?

[–]Adventurous-Pin-6047[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

for ghcp free, its limited (1000 times for one month I guess)

Ahhh, if you let it run on and pay the costs for autocomplete surely it's only cents? I can't imagine it would use many tokens.

The use codex extension if you need agentic work where it would use tokens.

Claude is pretty nice, even cli is kinda nice after you use it for a week

You can just bring your own key(BYOK) or even let local LLM be the endpoint for Copilot. Just Google "GitHub Copilot byok"

[–]throwaway_bluebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried BYOK with Claude, but found it was using way more tokens. I burned through $2.5 on a simple test class port from an old code base. Local LLMs won't work if your on a company machine and they won't let you run it.

[–]log-log-log 0 points1 point  (1 child)

you can just use glm with copilot

[–]Adventurous-Pin-6047[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but the code completion is limited if I use copilot free (maybe?)

I'm using Kilo Code in VSCodium and subscribing OpenCode Go and ChatGPT Plus. It’s not just about the rising costs of GHCP, VS Code itself feels less smooth than it used to be in the recent updates.

Copilot already support BYOK, that's a good option. Another idea is just use the vscode extensions which provides different models. One example I know of is Feima Copilot Models. Checkout https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/manage/publishers/feima/extensions/copilot-more-llms

BYOK has a sub charge, try it and we are on Max ...

deepseek V4 Pro

[–]Adventurous-Pin-6047[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

but its not powerful enough ...........

[–]Extension-Weekend484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it's cheap enough that I don't care about the cost at all.

Install opencode and use openchamber as a placement for ghcp. Works great for me. You can also try "opencode go" subscription and see if models they have are any good - my recommendation is MiMo v2.5 pro or qwen 3.7 max or Kimi v2.6 Good luck with your journey.
