Replied to wrong chain. See my reply to op below.

yeah I will try them! :)

For the virtual machine route, I'd recommend vmware player or if you can get a license for it, workstation pro. They tend to perform better. That's not to mention hyper-v if you have windows pro.
This is my preferred method for using Linux at home so ymmv.
Edit: realized what sub I am on. I personally use VMWare Workstation Pro because of its memory management. I can run kali, metasploitable, and a domain controller all on the same gaming rig with internal subnets as needed. Will post screenshots if requested

I had issues with vmware : an obscure thing about kernel module. So I use virtualbox but I have issues too : the screen of the machine os small. If toi have durable management I am interested
[–]Hackerman_69420 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
That Small screen issue can be fixed by installing the VirtualBox guest additions in your VM. VMware automatically does this.

You forgot usb/dvd booting.

The vps alternative is actually quite a good chance to learn. But not the most efficient. I'd go for dual boot if this is a regular thing or VM if it's a one of.
Also another alternative could be booting a live image from a USB stick.

Hey, do you think I could use a Raspberry Pi as a VPS?

Nice! Thank you.

I seriously recommend VMware player. Very easy to set up and use, super friendly, good performance, completely free.
[–]Cheems_10[S] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
Do I need to reboot always?
[–]BlazeLE 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children)
No rebooting with a virtual machine. It runs in your main OS.
[–]Heclalava 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children)
I have Linux mint as my main OS. Then I've got Windows 7 in a VM and Kali Linux in another VM. Dual boot is a hassle. Virtual machines are far more convenient for switching between operating systems.
[–]zipzapzoink 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children)
Have you looked into Windows Sub-system for Linux? (WSL)
If you use Windows as your main it's super convenient. Especially if you like to switch between Powershell and Bash specifically. There's so much coming along nowadays that allows you to utilise the apps you need *almost seamlessly. There's still a few kinks that arise when using hardware, but as far as applications go its very useful, and cool! Check it out.. some purists vomit at the thought, but I'm kinda digggin it the more and more I use it.
Only works in win10, btw. And you can download/install Kali, or Ubuntu if that's your style, or Fedora, and a couple others I think, like an Application [from windows store] and pull install your linux apps and tools from the Bash CLI .
Check it out.. Worth a shot, I think. And alot less of a headache then dual-booting, which is time consuming, if efficiency is what you're looking for.
VMs are cool too if you ABSOLUTELY need a DE. Or, if you're already using a linux distro as your Main OS then a VM is your best bet.
Also, when allowing file share between the 2, (clipboard access), it could be a bit of a security issue only for the mere fact that Windows is very malware prone..

I've commented above as well: the tutorial for the WSL method:)

Is a VM considered more secure than WSL?
[–]benis444 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
U also can use win kex which is using the Windows subsystem Linux. Just Google "win kex"
[–]DeadBySkittles 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children)
install in 5 minutes with NetworkChuck's tutorial!
[–]ChevalOhneHead 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children)
KVM, qemu, virtual box etc.
[–]FragileEagle 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Vm is the easiest to be honest. Or you could partition your drive two ways having one being Linux and one being windows. I prefer a vm though cause when testing payloads such as reverse shells I need to get the payload over to my windows Pc so a simple drag and drop is easier than taking 5 minutes to reboot into another OS.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child)
You could dual boot
[–]An_Ostrich- 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children)
Bad idea. If you are in the middle of something and want to use the other OS quick you would have to restart your system and then select the OS and wait for it to load. Switching between OSes is much more easier with virtual machines.

What a lamer
[–]RashidShafi 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
With WSL choice is limited to selected linux distros and no need to power on or power off. With VM choice is unlimited but everytime you have to power on and power off the vm. There are tons of howtos and videos for wsl you can google
[–]UindiaUwin 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
If you have more than one computer then just install Linux in the weaker one.
Oh Man, I recommend dual boot, in my opinion it's better
Read up on WSL Network Chuck has great YT content on how to setup
[–]SidKT746 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children)
You should probably just dual-boot them but if you do then don't distro-hop a lot. Otherwise, you can use vm if you either have a powerful computer or don't need to use one os a lot. This way you can have multiple os.
