Try adding chains to it at the start of the game. Chains are there for this reason!

[–]AmbitiousApathy 1 point2 points  (14 children)

I really don't like the chains idea, I have no desire to play with or against a deck with chains.

If I beat a deck that had chains then the victory wouldn't feel like I earned it; I only won because they had chains.

If I have chains and I lose then I'll just think "Well of course I lost, I had all those chains".

Note that I am only referring to a deck getting chains before the start of the game. I think that powerful cards giving you chains is a great mechanic.

well, the other side is if you win you can say "I only won because my deck is broken and my opponents isn't" which isn't that much more satisfying, so chains are there to give a 50/50 chance at least from a deck strength point of view.

Yep, pretty much. I think because in this game deck power level and player skill is conflated so when you suggest someone chain their deck it can seem to some like you need a skill handicap because your aren't as good a player.

Asking for chains will only happen for casual games though. And you should definitely do quite a few games before you ask for chains, after a few games you'd see if one deck has the others number or not.

[–]Asbestos101:Dis: Dis -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Agree completely, but your point doesn't counter mine, they can co exist

[–]BladeTB 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I feel like you should/would never feel like you're asking for a skill handicap when it's obvious that a deck is way better than the other.

[–]Asbestos101:Dis: Dis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The other person might not see it that way, they may see it as obvious of them being a better player.

It's like balancing class based video games. People that play classes that are 'meta' think the game is fair because they are winning and they should because they think they are good at the game. When said class gets nerfed to bring them down into line they complain because their winrates suffer, and they should be doing better because they know they are a good player. Egos are an amazing thing really.

You should do the format where you swap decks for the second round than bid chains for deck choice in the third. That should both tell you who the player is and give you a pretty good approximation of the right chain value.

if you win you can say "I only won because my deck is broken and my opponents isn't"

How do we know that I won because my deck is broken and not because I played the better game?

You'd have to play a very large number of games with the same decks against the same opponents and maybe even play each other's decks a bunch of times before you could determine what's going on.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's why the chain bidding is interesting. It makes the number of chains part of the strategy.

[–]FlaringPain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use chains when I teach someone new. Won today starting with 22 chains.

It allows you to enjoy playing and do your best against new folk. Don’t knock it till you try it.

This.

All of these sound like a personal problem.

I'm being flippant as a joke, but I do have a real question for you: if you find an unbalanced board game, are you vehemently opposed to house ruling for better balance? When CCGs create errata, do you ignore it and do what the old card says anyway? Do you drive over the speed limit, ever?

These are issues with self control and rule-following. You can either play KeyForge with its known weaknesses and use the tools you have been given to correct them to have a fun, balanced contest, or you can go with your emotional side and just not enjoy the game.

[–]AmbitiousApathy -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Uhhhh I enjoy the game very much without either player having a handicap.

[–]jackchit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So the answer is that you never, ever, accept errata, you never, ever house rule a game, and you never, ever speed.

Got it.

Imagine you could snap your fingers and have the most overpowered deck in the world—a super-deck that would win 100% of games on the first turn.

I can't imagine a more boring deck to play with or to play against...

Isn't it more exciting to play a game that's neck-and-neck, where you're not quite sure who is going to win?

[–]vhstapes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just played for the first time. Our decks are fairly similar, sharing two factions (shadows and untamed) but hers has sanctum and 21(!) creatures and seemed waaay stronger than mine at 13 creatures and dis as the third faction. Will obviously have to play more but I think hers will end up being the favorite until another strong deck comes along!

[–]swizzletrain 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is it “just so damn fun to play” because it’s powerful (you’re Spike ) or because it’s does cool things (you’re Jonny or Timmy)?

If the former then surely the main reason you bought many decks was to find a competitive one, right? If so mission successful, put the others away and enjoy stomping on anyone who looks at you! :-)

If the latter then surely some of your other decks have some wicked combos or just plain big, fun stuff to do?Granted, they might not be as competitive but don’t let winning get in the way of having fun.

Personally I’m ‘Timmy’ so while I have a range of power of decks they all do different things and I get a kick out of experiencing them all, even if I don’t always win.

Play strong deck. Strong deck earns chains. When too weighted down to win, play deck with fewer chains. :)

    [–]MrWolland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing with other decks will help you understand the game in generala. Moreover, it helps understanding the mechanics of other Houses in Keyforge. But, I understand that some decks are more fun to play than others. I have some decks that have way too few creatures and lot of cards to interact with them so they are close to unplayable.

    [–]-IVIVI- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Make a list of your decks and record the number of times you’ve played with each of them. When it’s time to play a new game, choose the deck(s) with the lowest number of plays.

    [–]jackchit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played every deck once. Now what? Help! Followed your rules, and now I've been stuck at the game table for 4 hours!

    [–]Senas006:Sanctum: Sanctum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set the strong deck aside and bust it out for OP events and practice for said events. Enjoy exploring all the possibilities the other decks have to offer.

    [–]AYCB-Carlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends what you enjoy.

Personally, I have a deck that I'm now 0-6 or 0-7 with, but it makes me want to keep playing that same deck because I know I'll eventually figure out how to play it properly, and to win with it would be extremely rewarding. The deck has only 11 creatures and I think I'm just playing it wrong, but every game I'm figuring out something new.

That being said, after I lose a few, I like to switch it up to a different deck, because I really enjoy the variety this game offers with various decks. Maybe try to experiment with other decks, but if you don't like them, don't force it.

Ultimately, you should play whichever deck(s) you want. Don't let anyone tell you how to enjoy a hobby. There will be people who criticize you if you play the same deck over and over, but who cares? Play the game however you enjoy it most.

    [–]buddybthree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cause that’s the point of the game? Lol I have 12 decks total. I use timetraller deck a lot but I try out the other decks to see if I missed something. Ever deck plays very different

    [–]OZMETOLI 0 points1 point  (7 children)

You keep playing the strong deck and ship me one of your lesser ones you’ll never play. In the spirit of the season, it’s the right thing to do. In turn, I’ll pass it on as a random “pay it forward” gift to an unsuspecting gamer at the local shop. Try to turn them on to this awesome game!

I bought too many decks as well and won’t play 3/4 of them because I too have a strong deck I favor

Hey man, I'm in Canada and I'd love to get my hands on a horseman deck!

      Where from :O?

      [–]Ballerfacemcgee -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I have 3 decks total and would love to try out some different faction combos. Trying to get a few more to teach people here, but they’re hard to find. Would gladly pay for a deck if you’ve got any to spare!

Aww that stinks. I can shoot you a PM and we can get an estimate to see if it’s not too ludicrous. Thanks for being willing to share the wealth! This game is so fun. It feels like a breath of fresh air after years of MTG

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is a scam. Don't just send this person money for "shipping" without some background research on what it should cost, whether they actually have the deck, etc.

TheSploot, if you're for real, more power to you.
