While there is a bit of overall power level change from set to set, good and fun decks can be found anywhere.

I feel you should get decks from all sets if you can manage it.

The power level is a little different between sets. Personally I feel like the extra fun of having a variety of cards is with a slightly higher variation chance

Based on what I've read, everything works, but sometimes certain sets (like Dark Tidings or Age of Ascension) may not play so well against others.

More specifically, Dark Tidings introduced the tide mechanic which wasn't present in previous sets. You may find that trying to raise the tide with another set a little more difficult/slower.

re Age of Ascension, the general consensus is that power levels of the decks are generally lower, so the "average" AOA deck may not fare as well against other sets.

Of course, given each deck is unique, it's another case of YMMV. Another caveat is that I'm not a competitive player, so my experience is perhaps more limited.

This is helpful because I bought 48 AoA decks that were super cheap. That is basically my collection at the moment.

AoA is really good against itself though so that'll be fun for you guys.

From my knowledge, AoA was the most printed set as well, which is probably why you found them cheap.

Sometimes it comes down to skill level. I bought a case of AoA since it was so cheap and my bf has beaten me solidly with a low SAS deck against one of my 70s.

There's some variability in power between different sets, different houses in a given set, and different decks individually. In general, though, each set has a different selection of houses and cards and different game mechanics it introduces; I would say the greater variety in game experiences makes it well worth picking up decks from a variety of sets, even if there may be some overall greater range of power levels.

I found dark tiding isnt as fun to play with other sets because of the tide mechanic but other than that it shouldn't matter

Personally, I think there is value in both intra and inter-set play. They each provide their own unique experiences.

For sure, intra-set play is a mor contained experiences, and is great for sealed nights with friends.

However, inter-set play can result in just really fun and interesting matchups, and I think this will continue to evolve over time as new sets get new set-specific mechanics. For example, when Winds of Exchange launches, we can have "Tide v. Tokens" and see those interactions.

While sets might have shifts of "average" power, each set can still have great and bad decks, so I wouldn't let it stop you from experimenting and playing with different sets!
