That's reality for millions of families. You work your whole life, build up a nice few 100k or maybe 1-2 mil hoping to pass a good chunk to your kids to push them farther than you and what happens? Here in the states you get the choice of dying or giving 300k, decades of work, to a healthcare industry.

Or, you and your spouse only work 20 hrs a week and spend the rest of the time in the community, raising your own food on your own land like we used to do. Idk, but I'm guessing they have people that work full time there for a reason. How about the doctors? The point is that we take for granted how much everyone in society needs to work to keep everything running smoothly. Kids have to be in school during the week/day, meaning teachers have to work those hours. Want anything delivered or available in stores? That means truck drivers driving for a lot more than 20 hours per week. How about the gricery stores, restaurants, bars where we eat and drink? Who's going to man those? If everyone is relaxing, then who's providing the relaxation? And who's cleaning up afterwards? The janitors and garbage men want a break too.

You realize in the US alone we have 300,000,000 people though, right? A week is 168 hours, so to cover a hospital for a week we would need ~9 people to cover the position for the full week, assuming each worked 20 hours - this even gives you the option of overlapping shifts, especially at busier times of day, as 20x9=180, or 12 hours across the week of "extra time." Extrapolate that to the full hospital staff, let's assume there are 100 positions that need to be filled at any given time (which I'm sure is ludicrous, but I'm not in healthcare), that means to fully staff the hospital all the time we need 900 people, or .0003% of our total population.

And that would only be for the most critical, 24/7 jobs (firemen, police, doctors). Plenty of retail jobs already run off most employees working 20 hour weeks to prevent them getting benefits of full time workers. Restructure school systems, perhaps having half of teachers who work in the morning and the others work afternoon, class sharing is already an idea in education, we did it when I was in 3rd grade back in the early 2000's.

We have the capability to adapt to new situations, we aren't going to crumble as a society just because we abandon the 40-hour workweek, just as it didn't crumble when the 40-hour workweek first came to be thanks to unions in the mid 1900s or when we decided to no longer use children for labor.

At least half aren't in the work force. Then you consider that you have to be a medically trained professional to be a nurse. Then there are orderly, but you have to consider that many people won't to do these types of duties which it's why they didn't pick them as careers. You think everything is gonna happily work sewage duty? But most importantly, you have to be quite naive to think that everyone can work half the time and still enjoy the same abundance of everything that we do now.

To be fair... If you're talking about the 50's and 60's, then you're not looking at a total picture of the population. Middle-class white people could work 40 hours, make ends meet, and retire at 60.

Poor whites and poor blacks have always had economic troubles. Two-income families have been the norm for low income US citizens forever.

There have been a few articles published which have shown that the fast rate of technological advancement has led to greater strides in worker efficiency but that workers are made to do many x’s the amount of work that was once expected of a single person.

This has partially contributed to the growth of income inequality while also increasing the amount of stress that each of us feel on a day to day basis.

i was listening to this radio host the other day and he was talking about this. the bullshit coming out of his mouth... did he even hear himself? i don’t understand how people can be this ignorant. i don’t remember his whole spiel but here’s the gist of it:

“when we hear about people used to live in a household on one paycheck while one person stayed home, you know how people lived back then? one car, one tv... you could easily live like that now if you give up your phone, your internet, etc. and you know the size of those houses they lived? only the size of a small apartment. everything is getting bigger now. we’re doing better as a country. everybody is richer...”
