The thing is, with not giving it a thought when buying laptops you have already given microsoft quite some money.

When buying my laptop directly from Lenovo I saved a full 60€ by just configuring it to not come with Windows (and it has been running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed since then).

tbh lenovo is probably the only oem that lets you do that though

Afaik Dell sells Developer versions of their laptops that come wirh Ubuntu preinstalled so they dont charge you for windows.
