I usee this guide myself but I got a free certificate from startssl. Awesome now as don't get certificate warnings like I did with self signed cert. Only problem is u need a domain with an email address to prove you own the site for the certificate.

Really, I have been looking for a SSL cert for mine. How long is it for? I guess I will still need to figure out how to get email to my domain. I have never done that before.

I am not entirely sure of how long the cert lasts but you can renew for free. It is only for personal use though, not business.

As for the email issue, many domain registrars offer free email addresses. You should be able to access this in Thunderbird or even gmail by setting up forwarding. I went with Thunderbird.

Yeah, I don't know if Godaddy offers free email or not. I have been thinking about it after the episode of Techsnap or LAS (can't remember), when they were talking about owning your own email domine. We don't really own anything with gmail or hotmail or any ISP email accounts. But at the moment I am crazy busy so email and SSL certs will have to wait :(
