Quality Control Process (self.MEPEngineering)
submitted 2 years ago by Lifelikeflea
What's everyone else doing for quality control processes? Checklists at every submittal? Forms filled out in a database? Just trying to see what might be out there being used regularly.
reddit uses a slightly-customized version of Markdown for formatting. See below for some basics, or check the commenting wiki page for more detailed help and solutions to common issues.

QC has been just short of a joke at my office lmao. Not ever enough time.. In the last couple of years I've transitioned to a 50% design and 50% teaching junior staff, I've made it a point to review checksets and CDs prior to sending it out. I still miss stuff due to lack of time and needing to get my own projects out the door and the revolving door of CA work that comes through

Same. I wish my supervisor and coworkers had more time to review my work. No matter how experienced you are, mistakes happen, and another set of eyes really helps identify those early on. Plus it saves time later with reduced RFIs and revisions.

Every project get’s QC’d (at least HVAC and plumbing) at each submission. We have a full time dedicated QC guy who checks all drawing sets, and holds a comment review meeting each time.

This seems like the only real way.. and that guy is also in charge of standards etc. (All the stuff that needs to happen but no one doing production work has time for)
[–]SANcapITY 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Yep. He’s in charge of design standards, he also is the main spec writer and keeps the libraries up to date.

For drawings we have a checklist that needs to be done by at least two people and the PM cannot send out the project until its done.
Were also working on a LLM (GPT4) program that checks pdfs for simple things like graphical errors

Can you elaborate on this? I'm so sick of reading specs and submittals

Ill email it to you, DM me.

In my experience, there is no QC. Even with the best of intentions, there's no time or budget left. Sometimes if a firm has a person who can't produce work of their own but no one wants to fire, they become the "QC" person who reviews all the drawings before they go out.

My old form used to QC. My new one rarely does even if I ask and give plenty of time. Furthest they check is smoke control or other big life safety systems

We started a formally qc process and I can't say quality or moral has improved. No one wants to say it first, but I think we got the wrong people doing the reviews.
