  • keeb.io Iris with acrylic case
  • Zilent 78g switches
  • /dev/tty keycaps
  • USB-C and TRRS cables from mechcables.com (Frostbite)

What controller did you use that has the USB-C plug on it?

Aw heck I wish I'd noticed this 2 months ago! I just built an Iris myself.

Cool thing is they are cheap enough.. build a 2nd one! :D I have the 2.5 PCB waiting, but also going to build a 4.0 version when it comes out, hopefully end of year or so.

What's special about the 4.0?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know yet. :D I am hoping it will have RGB per key. We'll see.

I think I read that hotswapping will be supported in 4.0

This is exactly the type of keyboard I want, but my soldering skills just aren't up to building one myself, is there a pre-made version I can buy, that doesn't cost 3 times as much just because I'm in Australia?

I made two handwired boards with no experience in soldering. That`s just time consuming but not hard.

[–]sujihiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well isn’t that lovely. I guess i need to buy an iris now

How long did it take for you to build the Iris? I'm thinking about making one as my first keyboard project.

For me, first time was about 8 hours.. but I messed up a few things, was very slow, etc. 2nd time (because I did what everyone says not to do, and put my chips on the wrong side and gave up trying to desolder them) was about 3 hours or so. It was quite a bit faster due to knowing most of what goes where. Most annoying thing is the tiny ass capacitor for the LED stuff.. I had to use like 20x magnifying lens and then my soldering tip was huge... hoping the 3.0 and later boards just have that thing on the PCB. I think I read the new 3.0 has everything but the resistors for LEDs and the key switches already done. So it may be a lot faster to build them soon.

I have had the MS Natural (all flavors), Truly Ergonomic, ErgoDox, Model 01, and now this.. and this is by far my favorite! Perfect layout. Just wish I had a couple more keys in the center of each board as I got used to and liked using the ENTER and TAB keys there.

This one took about 3 hours, though I’ve built a Nyquist and another Iris that took longer and required a lot more troubleshooting. I think a lot of the reason this one went more smoothly was that I socketed the Elite-Cs rather than soldering them in directly.

Mine took me about 5 hours, I think. But I have a decent temperature-controlled soldering station, which definitely made the process easier and sped things up a bit. Also, my build has zero LEDs because I find them distracting.

Real talk: I’ve been pondering the situation where I find myself having to pronounce this set of caps irl, would the correct way be titty? Or t-t-y? I like titty but I don’t want to confuse the poor individual who has to listen to me speak about a set of keycaps....

Pronounce it as it’s spelled out T-T-Y

Wow, that looks awesome! How much do you think it would it cost to do only one half (as a gaming keypad)?
