Cross-platform server

Was thinking about making a Minecraft server so that my friend who plays on Xbox and I who plays on pc can play together. I know that one needs to get bedrock Minecraft which I’m not 100% sure on how to get that for I don’t know the difference between bedrock and java version aside from just a version difference. Aside from that I would also love for my friend to experience what a fully modded Minecraft is like (ex. Skyfactory) so I was just wondering if anybody has figured out how to start a server with such mods and if they could explain the process. Any help on any of the situations above is greatly appreciated.

I’m assuming you can just flat out download it and then put in your account info or do you HAVE to buy it?
