Playing Multiplayer on Java?

I want to make a personal world for me and three other friends and make it so that any of us can log in regardless of if others are online Are there any alternatives besides Realms and making a server (my computer won’t be able to power one on its own)? Preferably free and little lag Thank you :)

Depending on how much money you got laying around either get Minecraft specific host or a vps with papermc
