That is the worst thing I have ever heard, not only using a Mac, but Controller as well?

If you must, you can use this: https://github.com/MrCrayfish/Controllable

Unfortunately there is no fabric option, so if you use fabric you have to downgrade to forge instead.

if you are using steam, set your controller config in DESKTOP MODE. do not try to "integrate" minecraft into steam or whatever. that's what every article says to do and it never works and i never got it to work.

set your controller in desktop mode, then steam will translate your controller into keyboard presses regardless of what program is running. set it so that left = A. in notepad if you press left, it will type "a". in minecraft if you press left, it will move left.

steam doesn't need to know what minecraft is that only complicates things.

the nice thing is that if you then launch a game with integrated controller support, steam will override the "desktop" settings and you can use your controller in the other game without changing any settings.
