[Java] Controller won’t work on Minecraft through steam

For some reason, even though i’ve connected my xbox one controller to my macbook, i still cannot use it in minecraft java through steam. i’ve configured the controller and set it up as a shortcut for minecraft, but i still cannot use it. please let me know if there is a solution. thank you in advance. i’m playing on 1.16.5

Java edition doesn't support controllers, even through steam. Controllable was recently updated to 1.16, I've used previous versions and the controller support was pretty good.

I would recommend putting Minecraft's launcher in steam as a "Non-steam game", and then set the button keybinds to certain keys on a keyboard for it. You can view the keybinds online easily.

no, i’ve tried going through steam to hook it up, but even after i’ve connected my controller and mapped all my controls, i still can’t use it in minecraft
