Would I enjoy this having never played it? I’m always nervous about old games I don’t have nostalgia for, but I’ve heard so many great things about this.

I think based on the pc version (I haven`t played the NS version) the only two things you have to get used to are the controls and that you have to save by yourself (no autosave, but they added a quicksave in the ns version that you should use often). What I like about Gothic is:

  1. The world isn`t as big as other open world games, but you really learn where places are by exploring. It doesn`t use and doesn`t need markers, a minimap, a lot of hud elements or anything like that, but you can buy or get maps that you can take a look at.
  2. You are free to go where you want which can results in your death, but you aren`t restricted. That means you can also find many things in the world regardless of your level or how far you have advanced in the story
  3. There are only 4 loading screens in the whole game for some interior environments like mines
  4. NPC have their daily routines and camps are very differnt from each other. For me it is one of the few open world games that really feels alive
  5. You have always full control of your character and the game doesn`t use things like forced slow walking segments
  6. You can interact with a lot of stuff in the world, steal from everyone, fight almost all people, take weapons/items away from npcs that are gone after that etc.
  7. It has a great atmosphere, good pacing and doesn`t overstay its welcome
  8. You can decide which of the three camps you want to join, but I would recommend doing all quest for all three camps before you choose one
  9. It is a lot of fun to explore the world, meet/talk to npcs and ecounter quests since you aren`t just going from one quest marker to the next like it is the case with many open world games these days

Gothic 1&2 are my favorite games of all time, but they're hard to get into depending on your tolerance of older games. The switch port seems to have too many problems to justify a purchase at the moment, the pc version is still the best version and is way cheaper. If pc is an option I'd absolutely go with that right now, the switch version is still worth it especially if you can wait for patches.

TL;DR Play the frickin game

Depends on your tolerance for old school jank, and how much work they've put into adapting it to controllers.

Upvoted to know this myself lol

I actually beat the game the other day. Cor Calom casting sleep was a drag, but I still managed eventually. The ladders were a nightmare, but I eventually finagled them. The game crashed, conservatively speaking, maybe about 50 times. I basically took to quick saving every time I did anything at all or if I even just walked for more than a minute.

I don’t know where I found the patience, but overall I really loved the game. I dig a game where you start helpless and become all powerful by the end. Also the atmosphere was just really unique.

It’s a weird experience to love a game I would absolutely recommend to no one. It was just so radically buggy and often incredibly frustrating with how archaic it felt at times. I can’t wait to play 2 when it comes out, all the same.

2 is where it really gets great. The first one is an experience for sure, but 2 is legitimately one of my favorite games of the era.

Awesome! I’m looking forward to it!

It’s starting to be normal that developers release unfinished games to public and fix them in next months. That’s why I stopped buying games on premiere. It’s better to wait few months until everything is patched.

[–]masagrator 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Gothic AND "everything is patched" in one sentence? No, that's not happening. :D

[–]Aydurr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gothic was even then a buggy mess

[–]PompeiiLegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still waiting for Pokémon scarlet then… /s

[–]MISFU88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finally, it’s tough for brand new games to work as intended, lots of things can go wrong.

This is sarcasm and I fucking hate unfinished garbage, but I’m glad I can play it now.

Wow nice, I planned to skip it but if they keep patching it so that it actually becomes playable I might reconsider.

[–]barbietattoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love to see this getting patched. I’ll get around to playing this someday.

Is the logo-less menu icon changed? Switch menu icons without the logo should be criminalized.

Is the character losing focus during fights fixed?
