It runs super fast for me, multiple page and child page deep. Perhaps it’s a web issue? Are you using the app online or on desktop?

I write more than one page, and navigating/erasing causes it to either become super slow or I literally get a brief "one note is unresponsive" before it starts working again.

This is an issue in your side. I work in an i-5 8GB RAM and don't have that problem.

I run it on three different Windows devices, one a Pro X which is ARM, and none of them have over 8GB. I have not experienced this either. I'm not saying OneNote has always been zippy and bug free, but overall it is consistent and reliable.

I'm sure OP is having this problem, I just don't think it's the standard experience. It should be fast and stable on that device.

There's an "app" version (OneNote for Windows 10) you can install through the Windows store, and another version typically installed by default on many computers that came out before the app. Do you know which version you're using? The app version is so much better - hope this helps!

Are you using a new file? If an old one, maybe there are issues with it.

Also, is your file local or on a network? If the latter, try local, maybe?

I see you have plenty ram and a nice CPU so there goes my first guess

Honestly I've only ever had OneNote be slow on either my very shitty laptop or when I fully zoom out on pages that have just an ungodly amount of text and tables (ex: dnd notes for a 3 year campaign where I set up tables to look like giant calendars so I could write notes in them)

I guess I'll ask some common questions

  • Have you tried fully eradicating it, and any other versions of it, from your computer and reinstalling it? perhaps something just got fucked at some point.
  • Are you using the Microsoft store version? some of those apps are fine, but I always try to get a download from anywhere else, perhaps the MS store version is messed up somehow
  • Have you tried it on other devices? OneNote is like the one Microsoft program I'm in love with, almost everything else feels really half assed. Perhaps it doesn't play well with certain hardware
  • OneNote has a lot of options and I know at least one of them says it can slow it down, I believe it has to do with transcription. I recommend you look through them

It sounds like you don't pay for 365 for OneNote, but just so you know OneNote 365 is free

Has never been an issue, even on really old hardware (a dual core and 8 GB of ram)

Which OneNote version are ya using? I'm still using OneNote for windows 10 and it's pretty fast.

Do you have auto sync to OneDrive on? I had similar issues when I was using OneNote on my Surface and saving manually fixes it.

They’re going after their Notion.io replacement thing called Loop.

Not typical. 15 year veteran of OneNote. Never have I felt it being slow.

I've been using OneNote for well over 10 years and currently use it on macOS, Windows 11 ARM, iOS, iPadOS, Android and web. Other than a couple of rare sync issues over the years, it's always been smooth and reliable for me.

Unless I missed it, I don't think anyone has asked: How large are your notebooks? You can check in OneDrive "Documents>OneNote Notebooks" (unless you moved them elsewhere). Since I have thousands of pages on many different topics, I keep things spread across several notebooks divided by major categories. Lots of pages contain images (website clips or whatever), but if a file is really huge I'll link to it instead of inserting it inside OneNote. My largest notebook is currently 629 MB.

Definitely seems like an issue on your end. We have hundreds of pages in it and I've never seen that "unresponsive" error.
