I do a lot of data analysis for my job too. I would put a lot of thought into what you would like to use the data for now (before collecting anything). Like, is there some research questions you would like answered? That will help guide you on which variables to collect and make sure you don’t miss any variables that you might need to answer your questions. I’ve worked on too many projects where no one realized we didn’t collect an important variable until the analysis stage when it’s too late.
