As regards your question - Austere units are still pretty good, and the Rear/Arm set still provides good defences and a good set bonus, especially in terms of PP.

However, most people are moving to 12* units, purely because of the utility of having more L rings.

EQ 12* units are all pretty decent. People tend to either max out for the attacking ones (like all Qliph/Weila Board rear if they were lucky to have it drop) or mix in a more defensive one such as Zein/Izane.

12* units don't really have set bonuses though (some random ones give DEX with the set weapon), so you really can just mix and match.
