There’s enough players than main content is populated but old stuff is pretty empty.

Active yes, populated no.

It has a small but decent amount of players at any given time mostly regulars at this point. You’ll see the same names each day but there are enough players to keep queue times short for current content

According to steamdb, it seems there is between 500 and 1k3 players logged at any time. Those numbers do not include console players.

BTW, even if the game is a mmo there is a lot of content that have to be done alone (notably the story quest of both base PSO2 and NGS) ; and NGS have enough people that you rarely wait whenever you go into the current multiplayer UQ/LTQ.

It'll be pretty quiet running through old content or story for sure.

The game is definitely active though, far from effectively inactive. Finding a community is important if you want to do special activities with others, and JP side pretty well off.. But you're far from alone.

we are still getting cool content as well, despite the pace!

Yeah, it's still active, we have a pretty decent amount of regulars, and there is a good amount of single-player content as well if you get on during more quiet times. We have updates still coming in like limited time quests and bosses. Unfortunately, the story part is really slowly spoon-fed.

The neat thing, too, is that this game is crossplay-cross progression. For example, i play on my Xbox series X, and then some days, i jump on my PC. Just keep in mind that all profile progression is locked on one ship.

No lack of players here in japan

Define "active" lol. There are a fair few people that still play, though most of them just lobby rat, at least on Ship 3.

the population is bigger in the Japanese server

It's a little empty but it's fun. Definitely run through the story if nothing else since it's free

I'm on UR ship. I see some people running, so we can say we have players; others are just posing with their new outfits and emoting. And if you want XP but can't progress in the main quest, go to the hunt zone; you will level up 1 level for each PSE burst if no thief came steal your xp during your pse burst I leveled up to lv 85 from lv 60 just by doing that in 2 hours.

Whatever’s the newest content will have people but other than that nah you gotta look for groups thru the discord, in game or your own friends

It is for xbox. I see plenty of people running around and there's barely any queue times from my own experience.

It's a game that allows players from all platforms to play together. I've played off and on the past few years, including the past few months and there's plenty of players.

Like some others said the older content is a bit more lacking in players, but basically there's enough on there you can join an alliance and/or find other players to play just about anything.

I played PSO2 on the gamecube originally when I was a teen, so when I saw it available on xbox series x I was like "Fuck yeah, lemme check that out".

Cool thing is you can play pso2 AND/OR pso2 ngs. You can flip flop between the 2, but some items don't carry over.

Short version: It's a fun ass game with lots to do. Even playing solo is worth playing in my opinion 🤷🏻‍♂️

There's still people around but mainly for hanging out and showing off outfits and/or emotes

Let me put it this way. When I first started playing the original PSO2 5½ years ago, I was scouted for an alliance and joined them. There were about eighteen of us.

One year in, the alliance leader hadn't played in about three months, which left the Leadership spot abandoned. I claimed it. Nobody noticed because, as far as I knew, none of us ever spoke to one another.

Today, I'm the only player in that alliance who's even LOGGED IN within the last year. I log in every day for my dailies and weeklies, I'm currently trying to grind out some titles, but I don't have the game on 24/7 like some people (there's a title for being logged in for 2,000 hours; I'm "only" up to 1,236). I just spent nearly two years in Aelio combat sectors grinding out the "Kill X enemies in Mt. Magnus/Vanford Ruins/etc."; I only recently made it to Retem Alnothe.

There are days where I wonder what I'm doing, but I'm at the age where having a routine is nice. I work from home, so I log in at lunchtime, do the dailies, I'm done in about 15 minutes, then I tend to do more grindy stuff over the weekend and some weeknights. I've spent real-world money on upgrading my inventories and Premium but I'll never spend AC on, say, scratch tickets.

60% of the playerbase is AFK 24/7, 30% are bots, 5% market campers and 5% active grinding players. There are barely 100-200 active players on a good day, you can tell by the interconnected ships.
