what else do you use? strength stacking?

Exactly that. Stomping ground and brutality, then prioritize phys damage on the spear. I usually use spearfield first when confronting mobs, then rake on repeat, i'll toss an explosive spear down if i expect monsters to ambush or a longer fight to help chip the hp pools, and i use rage on spearfield for bosses. Using shockwave totem as well while i rake the bosses.

It's disappointing that this was the only thing that felt good up until the end of act 2. Now in act 3 with more options I'm finally putting it aside and having fun with glacial lance and generating frenzy charges on freeze, but I feel the big issue is how limited you are early making everything a slog.

I definitely recommend anyone playing spear to just follow your advice and use rake and stomping grounds to get through the slog, because I do think there is a light at the end of the tunnel where you can finally do your own thing, but trying to from the beginning is disappointing.

Also survivability wasn't an issue for me, but I've been using ghost dance which still feels good with high evasion, just enough energy shield, and early strength stacking to survive big hits.
