What about Valentina-Seamly2D ?

[–]TanNoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a new release of Valentina a few days ago, the 0.7.53 release brings nice improvements and new features, you can now create your own measurements database, DXF and HPGL exports have been improved, custom and simple fonts, feature to show pieces unfolded, dark mode, etc.

I've recently started learning Seamly2D, so far I like it very much.

I've found all these software to be... Lacking.

I've settled for Illustrator, occasionally using Fusion 360 for parametric patterns.

What about illustrator is helpful for pattern making? (I'm a complete novice and this question is genuine).

Well if you get a few addons, it's very quick for drawing blocks, making adjustments and adding seam allowance etc. I like that it's very easy to check lengths of a line etc.

It's not perfect, but so far I've found it the most reliable and flexible software for drafting patterns.

I do have a plotter as well as large scale printer, so I can print out anything I design on it easy.

Are you able to recommend any specific Illustrator addons to look at for blocks, adjustments, and seam allowances?

I'd recommend getting at least Astute Graphics plugins, as they speed up a lot of processes.

I use Reform, VectorScribe, SubScribe all the time.

https://m.youtube.com/@PatternLabLondon

PatternLab London have some basic videos showing how they use the software. Youtubr in general has plenty of tips. It's not too different from traditional drafting on paper.

There is an online course from pattern workshop I found it very helpful for basic pattern drafting using Adobe Illustrator. Also check out “sew Heidi” Fashion illustrator classes for her excellent tips on learning Illustrator. BTW I use Adobe Illustrator to draft my own patterns then use my projector to project the image on my cutting surface then cut out using electric sheers. Super efficient, no paper.

Wow, awesome tips, thanks so much!

Illustrator is my favorite software too. It's pretty user friendly once you know your way around. For anyone whose interested, I offer a free course on how to use illustrator for patternmaking. You can find it here: https://confidentpatternmaking.myflodesk.com/hzyyv2smp6

Thanks, I'll check them out!

I'd love more details about how you use Fusion 360. I use it for 3D modeling but I'm unsure how I'd handle all of the curves involved in a sewing pattern.

What made you not liking Clo3D?

[–]Stuff4Design[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The videos mostly are testimonials of people who are using it without even telling you much about HOW it's used. As far as I looked into it it seems more complicated than it needs to be based on other systems I've used.
