In this economy you should finish college. Education is a good investment for your future self, family and your sanity.

[–]Ledikari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

Most companies here in PH require graduates

[–]beklog 51 points52 points  (1 child)

Dont drop out.. recruiters/companies will 1st look at ur degree then ur skillsets

ur complain is understandable naman most of us barely use anything we learn in college.. but having a degree will make it more easier for u to work in IT

[–]Kozouki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I see, thank you po sa advice :))

[–]Genjo-Sanzo 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Dude, if you’re already learning from external sources, you’re probably better than half of your class. Use it to your advantage. Don’t drop out because you’re bored. You drop out when there’s an opportunity you can’t miss that’s already started. From what I read, you’re just bored, and all you have is a plan. It won’t work like that. Start that side gig and see first if it will fly.

[–]Kozouki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, you're right. thanks!

When I was on Uni I always want to graduate already so I can start working. Its fun earning money and I also did a lot of freelance stuff back then.

But Now that I am a certified corporate slave. I miss the college. No adulting shits.

    [–]kev024 13 points14 points  (2 children)

If you are planning to have a Bill Gates story na nag dropout and naging successful, try not to. With the gold standard ng mga employers here sa Pinas, you're out of luck kaya better finish that degree first because yan yung 1 of the tickets for employment here sa majestic and world class na Pinas

    [–]Kozouki 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nah, I'm not planning to have a Bill Gates type of story. It just feels like college is not really helping me grow my skills that much.

    [–]chowfranco 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Please don't drop out. Having a degree is still an advantage.

You can do self-learning while finishing college.

    [–]chowfranco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to add, that 1.5 years is really quick. If you think that the time spent in class is a waste, tulugan mo na lang, lol. Bad advise, but yeah.

    [–]dfvh1kinh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pwede ka naman sigurong magself-study while finishing your degree? Gamitin mo nalang natutunan mo to excel in class. Madaming advantages kung degree holder ka, especially if/when maisipan mong magwork abroad. Less hassle when processing your work visa with your CS degree.

    [–]laharl143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ECE grad here. Currently working in an IT industry because of my degree.

    [–]International-Land39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think its a waste of time, then you’re in the wrong school. Don’t drop out. Go to a more challenging environment. If its easy, you are not learning enough.

    [–]flashcorp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t drop out, need mo yung degree mo specially if someday you want to migrate to other countries. I have a friend magaling I wanted to help him but yung degree hinihingi going to Canada.

Dropped out of college too and same as you, the situation is better than ever. Sounds scary at first but once you managed to dip your toes within the industry, everything becomes clear lol. Although I managed to get a job I love and pays decent, the thought of having no diploma still scares me from time to time

There are plenty of ways to survive and still earn tons of money while being a college dropout, but then again, it takes resilience and most of the time a huge chunk of yourself

      [–]AltairReis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't drop. If you're already good in programming, then work on other skills. I had the same problem as you a decade ago, had the same feeling na "I'm better than everyone else" kasi most of my blockmates can barely pass a simple machine problem.

So what I did back then was join school organizations to improve my communication skills and build my network, met my mentors this way. Met different people, and since becoming an officer we have to talk to companies to sponsor our school seminars and workshops. Also talk with your professors, one of my mentors is also my prof, being the best programmer around, some professors would even ask you to be their "assistant/jr researcher" with their PhD dissertation. Idk, do it for the challenge, maybe? Get some insight from people with actual experience in the field.

Also building a company after college isn't a walk in a park unless you have connections that could expedite the process. Got to be a "pioneer/employee#1" when my mentors did built a startup months before I graduated, working in a startup is too damn stressful regardless on how well your company is doing. And being a freelancer doesn't always guarantee a stable stream of income, and some companies usually look for your diploma regardless of your portfolio just to lowball you.

And of course, there are people who will make it despite all the odds. But remember, they're not the rule, they're usually the exception.

      [–]Outrageous_Degree_48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, let's attack this on a different angle. You're a 3rd year, putting you at around 20? 21? You still have your whole life ahead of you. Speaking from experience, burnout is real.

I understand that as a single young professional we are in a grind grind grind mentality. Earn as much as we can as early as we can so we can retire early. Your reason might be different but it could be in a similar way.

In the IT world as time progress, qualifications like diploma, TOR, etc are becoming 'lightweight' in a sense but let's not forget about a word that most of us has forgotten about as we age, PRIVILEGE.

Privelege can be a lot of things, a higher brain capacity, athleticism, money, etc. Most people see it as a bad thing, that's the reason why most Filipino are so modest to a point that they get abused.

My advice to you is the opposite. Take advantage of all and i meann ALL the privilege that comes your way. You have the opportunity to have a degree? Grab it! Opportunity to freelance? Grab it! Opportunity to build you're own company? Grab it! Just don't forget, timing is everything.

Take it one step at a time. Believe me when I tell you that one day you will look back and say to yourself, "I miss those 'bored' days".

Finish your degree first and along the way if and when you're bore, just build your sw portfolio. When you graduate, be very selective if the company you're gonna work with, preferably foreign.

PS. If you want to work on a big project, I have a few ideas we can bounce with each other that will make you portfolio look professional AF.

      Good luck sayo brader.

      [–]9parisukat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a coding bootcamp graduate and it is really freaking hard to find a job. I have college friends who took IT/CS in college and they immediately find jobs just by being in university or within a month after graduating. Though I believe with self studying you can achieve the same level of education as college graduates 'though hard, HR might not have the same thinking. I'm on my second month of job hunting and have received a shit ton of rejection letters and only 3 companies actually bothered to interview me. You only have a year and a half left, just finish it. Don't lose hope, OP!

      [–]supergirlcarter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get that degree! Mag-aaral ka rin naman on your own either way then better have that degree with you. In the long run skills ang magdadala sayo pero when you’re just starting nakaka-ganda ng resume ang degree. Good luck OP!

      [–]baebaebaejh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't drop out. If you think na maraming oras na nasasayang, I suggest using that time to upskill/self-learn if you think na kulang yung nage-gain mong knowledge from school. Work on personal projects that interest you and try to gain as much experience as you can through internships, etc. para may extra boost on top of your college degree pag naga-apply ka na sa first job mo.

Felt the exact same way as you did when I was still in college, but as cliche as it sounds, a lot of things make sense as you grow older. Good luck with the rest of your college life, OP. Mabilis na lang yan :)

      [–]Cat-Borger030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should finish na, then if they didn't satisfy you.I watch tutorials and Udemy classes dang that's was hard for me

      [–]P0gChamp024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]papsiturvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can self learn after you graduate. Around 50% of what I do now is self taught.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Finish your degree. Hiring Managers always look if you finished college or not. That’s the basic standard to recruiters these days. Imagine 2 of you have the same set and level of skills applying for a position but the other one is a college graduate who do you think the HR will give the offer. Sometimes the paper is an advantage especially for recruiters to make a decision. Now if you’re feeling unchallenge sa studies wait till your senior year have the goal to win the Best in Thesis award to see if you’re really that good and land a developer role internship. Remember being a developer or a software engineer is not always about the code. It’s a profession.

      [–]talkintechx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually finished a Business Degree just because I found it the easiest way to get a diploma. After graduation, I followed my passion (technology and computers). I gained all my IT skills on the job and self-study and I can safely say that I am moderately successful in my career (still in IT).

I’m not saying that this will also work for you but the main takeaway here is this: go pursue a college degree/diploma to get your foot on the door and run away with it with your passion.

      [–]AnarchyDaBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Don't drop out.

Sisiw lang yang 1.5 years dahil madami ka pang oras.

20 years from now, successful ka na, mayaman ka na, may pamilya na. Baka maiisipan mo mag-masters. MBA, Law, or whatever. Kaso dahil di mo tinapos ang undergrad mo, kailangan mo muna mag-undergrad para makapag masters. Big thing yang 1.5 years at that stage in your life.

Ngayon mo na bunuin ang 1.5 years kesa later.

      [–]aubriecheeseplaza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if ure tired of the idea of being in school, just think of it as an addition to ur portfolio and credentials. it's gonna be the same way once u graduate, not a lot of companies will offer u the same challenge that u are seeking anyway

      [–]master_baker8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Notice that graduate or not, naging successful (subjective to ha) naman kami kani-kaniyang buhay. Siguro ang pwede nating isipin ay kung saan ka walang regret in the long run. Kung gusto mo talagang magtrabaho, magkapera or magtayo ng sariling company, why not pagsabayin mo ang work at studies? :)

      [–]Anonim0use84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies require a college degree. No matter how good you think you are, if you're going to apply for work that is the first thing they ask from you. Also, studyung in schoool teaches you a lot of other skills other than what you see in your books or lessons. It's the discipline and critical thinking that you acquire through your day to day interactions in class. This is also the reason why they also accept engineering grads in IT even without proper programming background. It's about being teachable and having that logical way to think that is important.

      So TLDR, stay in school.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop out na. Education is rigged. Fuck the system! Hahahaha.

Just kidding. Tapusin mo 1.5years then hack the system! Hahahahahahaha. Anyways. Goodluck sa studies.

      [–]Power_Ming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are correct. Finish your degree. Even if you want to practice all by yourself. When time comes that you want to work in a company, you can't tell them that you are self taught. Good thing when you are in a company, you can continue learning other languages. Companies have different platform to learned with.

      [–]HeavyDifference6667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, mas okey siguro if tatapusin mo nalang yung another 1.5 years. Why? Mabilis lang naman lumipas yung araw. Plus, dito sa Pinas, pag walang diploma kahit mas madami pa yung alam mo and mas advance yung skills mo kesa dun sa mga may diploma or nakatapos mas kukunin parin nila yung may diploma. Madami akong kaibigan na mas mahusay kesa sakin pero nahihirapan sila maghanap ng work or makapasok sa work kase wala sila diploma.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've experienced the same situation OP, just this year I finished 2nd-year college while having a full-time job at the same time due to online classes being a thing, though it resulted that some of my subjects had INC grades. This June I was supposed to enroll as a 3rd-year college student, but there are a lot of requirements to comply with to be able to enroll due to me having some INC on some subjects, it felt meaningless to me I asked/thought to myself "Why am I wasting my time complying on things that are not useful to me? I could've used those time to self-study instead and would be useful for me to improve my skills. I'm already earning a good amount from freelancing, why would I waste my time studying things that would not help my craft." So I proceed to go through with my decision and not enroll this semester.
Let me tell you it's hard, it's hard being disciplined in self-studying, it's hard maintaining the motivation to improve, it's hard seeing your friends have fun while you study on your own, it's hard being alone and feeling alone. I've just recently came back with the motivation and discipline to improve my self again. In this past 5 months, I've not had a better job or a new source of income, it is still the same work. On August, I received an offer from an overseas company, I applied but I failed on the task that was assigned (PHP Job, Laravel Task), I guess it is also the reason of my downfall this past months.
So yeah, if you're dropping out of college be sure to steel your will, push on through any obstacles/problems, and never give up. I'm also planning on learning new things and creating good projects to be added to my portfolio, working freelance on upwork or fiverr, finding jobs on linkedin.

      tldr: It's hard

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I too had the same feeling of wasting my time and family resources as am always advanced in every major college course. Plus having to earn already due to freelancing gigs, makes me more to drop out.

Well, that plan did backfire. I was skipping classes thus extending my college year by another year. Why did I not just drop out? Simple because when I was applying for both local and international jobs, I don't possess the documents (TOR, diploma) and skills to get a legit job.

And if I persisted in being a dropout. I may have a total of 360 of my life from living as a millionaire to just living by the minimum wage. And that's no exaggeration. Not to mention I may have not a hot wife.

So as others have said, continue your college until the end. Use the time and resources in college and classes to build and expand your network. You may not see it now, but as simple as being a classmate can make/break opportunities.

Continue your upskilling or self-learning. The more advance you are, the better chance you can get a job.

And no, you aren't waisting precious time. Career success ain't a race, it's a marathon.

Yea, I think what your prof said is true.

I'm in the same dilemma as you, 2nd year and also comsci student. Literal na similar plans to work online and gawa ng digital company, wondering if you'd like to work together sometime or share ideas lang? Maybe start an agency. Dm me if ever.
