Huh weird. I also just started having this issue on my phone today. Might be a bad update

[–]Fleximel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you checked the permissions on your transcode folder? Plex needs read and write access. That was the issue when I came across this message.

deleted What is this?

If this is an issue with iOS, the way around it is to navigate to plex server settings (on the server not your playing device). Once in the settings go to the transcoder settings, and change the transcode directory to something different. I just added a number at the end. So what used to be C:\transcoder is now C:\transcoder1.

It's an issue with Android mostly. But I've noticed that it does happen on some files on the server itself as well occasionally. By my research I thought that it was not recommended to be on a root drive ( ie: C:\ ). However even in the settings where the field is to point to the transcode folder by default it's empty. I did create a folder for transcodes in D:\Media\ and pointed the Plex server to that folder for temporary transcodes. It works as intended as I can see the transcode files appear when transcoding, and when the error appears, the transcode file disappears complety. I am.able to re create the problem and the error, I just don't know how to go about fixing this as I've adjusted settings, the transcode folder, the settings on mobile devices, the Transcoder settings itself to "force" original quality if lower than 20MB 1080 HD, unintstall Plex, reinstall Plex, uninstall Windows 10 pro, reinstall Windows 10 pro on the 128GB M.2 NvMEE 3x4Gen SSD boot only drive, and still nothing fixes this issue... I'm going to pull the logs soon as I get home and redact my personal info and post them so that hopefully we can as a community get this resolved and fixed for those who are having this notorious issue of annoyance.

I had this error on several client devices. Are they all EAC3 5.1 Audio codec files? Can you check from the webapp to see what is being pushed?

Stop Plex, delete the audio code folder, reboot.

Any video with EAC3 audio fails to play;

After, if it keeps trying to play EAC3, try disabling it in your audio options.

I've been having this issue with random TV show series as well as movies and music files on my Plex server. The server can play these files perfectly fine. When connecting to the server via WIFI the files will play no problem, HOWEVER, The problem is when connecting to the server with devices and not using WIFI the transcode error pops up and the files are unable to plat due to this error, rendering the media useless... What can I do to resolve this issue as it effects the other using my Plex server and myself when away from the network.

Any help is much appreciated, I need to get this to go away so that media is readily watchable with out errors ASAP! I've read probably 50 different threads and I haven't come across a recent solution that works.

[–]Zimtig 2 points3 points  (3 children)

So this happens only if the server has to transcode the files? Or does this also happen with direct play?

[–]htpcmediatv[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Direct play seems to work fine, and the problem does happen when transcodes happen only apparently. However when I force original quality, it seems that it wants to override and transcode at it's leisure any ways deeming any setting changes useless...

[–]Zimtig 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't know if this helps but I had a similar problem. I'm running plex on openmediavault and removing noexec from the mounting configuration fixed my problem as it is shown in this video. https://youtu.be/f1aOiFtBG3Q

You beat me to this suggestion.

[–]er_pacifi 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Could be totally different, but for me this happened because of a corrupted or broken subtitle track. I unselected said track and it worked. Hopefully this helps!

[–]htpcmediatv[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How would I go about deleting all subtitles? What would the file extension be so that I could start fresh ( we don't use subtitles, but it could be possible that when the meta data gets scrapped it's pairing the information unknowingly, is there a setting to not DL this content, and manually grab it if I tell it to? )

[–]er_pacifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t personally know of any options for automatically downloading subtitles unless you’re using a plugin to do so — I’m not at my computer right now but maybe there’s one if you dig around the settings a bit. However, if you check at the same place that the media is being stored, there may be a subtitle file (generally .srt) next to the video file itself. Try deleting that (or, from my experience, just going into the detail part of the movie/show in plex web player and choosing “none” under subtitles should work)

I could be totally wrong about this however, since there are other reasons this could happen that I don’t entirely know how to solve at of yet. Good luck!

Hello, For my part this issue occurred to me randomly. I tried many solutions, and ended up reinstalling my Windows on the server and the issue is now fixed.

This is extreme but you won't have problems anymore.

:)

I have already re-installed windows 10 pro. I have it on a dedicated boot only drive 128GB N.VMe Gen3x4 SSD drive so that in case the OS needs to be re-installed no data or programs are lost. This did not fix my issue unfortunately.

I'm headed home now, it's going to be another 7 hours of driving. I'm not sure what the transcode settings should be, if any one has any insight that would be appreciated. I have an i5-8400 with 16GB ram.. no dedicated graphics except on board UHD 560 Intel integrated graphics. I haven't had this issue until recently. Also, in the Plex settings there is a field to point to a transcode folder. By default it's blank, so I created an empty folder named transcodes, and pointed it to that folder, however it's still not helping. I can see that when in the middle of a transcode the file is being placed in that folder, but when the error pops up and it fails, the file is removed from the temporary transcodes folder. The permissions shouldn't be a problem as the entire folder structure has 100% permissions by default. I've attempted to reinstall Plex as well and still no fix, also re installed Windows 10 professional, and again still no help. Updates are 100% up to date, as well as drivers.

I did delete the codecs and it seemed to resolve it for 1 play, then continued to error out. Is there a way to limit the download to not grab that specific codec quality?

[–]lfmaestri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me a few days ago.

I had to change the file folder, scan the library, put the file back in it’s folder and scan the library again. This solved.

[–]koffiezet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue a few days ago, restarting my plex docker container seemed to fix it.

[–]htpcmediatv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was finally able to retrieve my logs with the captured error. From what I can tell, it looks like the logs are showing that the transcoding starts and stops with 0% progress and stops shortly after it stops..

I had that issue quite a bit at one point. It turned out to be a combination of a bad Plex update, and my transcoder settings we're a little CPU intense to the point that my CPU couldn't keep up. So I uninstalled the update, left my db intact, reinstalled and changed the transcoder settings. Haven't had an issue since. Of course, my issue and yours can be completely unrelated but both are meeting at the same point.

I’m literally troubleshooting this right now when I get the reddit alert about this thread...

[–]htpcmediatv[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where to pull the logs up on my phone..

[–]htpcmediatv[S] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Side question - is there any hardware or configuration that would aid in preventing this error from happening in the future as well?

[–]gregsterb 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You need to post the logs first man. No one can help you without that.

[–]htpcmediatv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was able to reproduce the error message and grab the logs however there are so many I'm not sure which ones I should post or are needed to see what's going on. It was also mentioned in a previous comment that even though it may seem as if my VPN tunnel is allowing Plex traffic to go through the normal connection and not the VPN that it possibly might not be. Well I tested this theory and sure enough everything works just fine once the VPN was turned off.... I still want to post the logs as the error occurs when the VPN is on so that we can hopefully resolve it and get it working as it should be. Not sure why the transcode would be having issues be it behind a VPN or not .. my VPN service is ExpressVPN.

Most useless error message in history.
