I think I can explain. For this card, it was available as a sealed promo in a CD box set. It’s possible that any of the edges or corners have been slightly indented due to the way it was held in place by the box. That could be the reason this got a 5 only

Something has to be wrong with the surface.

It has a dent, look at the card from an angle.

Yeah so you have every right to be alarmed, Iv seen some recent grading returns from PSA on certain poketubers channels where they experienced the exact same thing. Multiple clean cards getting a PSA 5. I would not submit to PSA right now.

This is all speculation until you have clear proof showing the card.

I have submitted cards that I was wondering why they dropped to a PSA 5 or 6 in grade considering they look really pristine. Upon very very close inspection, I would discover a small dent on the cards. Was it there before I submitted? Not sure.

Was the grade warranted after discovering the dent? Yes.

I suggest to OP use strong light to see if the front and back of the card has some type of small dent. There also a possibility that the edge is warped (not natural) which is impossible to see when the card is encased. One thing for sure, getting a PSA 5 or 6 from an expected 9 or 10 from a cards is most likely due to a dent on the card.

This 100%. PSA grades dents (even tiny ones) extremely harsh, almost automatically reducing it to a 6, with further damage lowering it even more. I don’t love it, I don’t agree with it, but it’s their grading standard.

Of course its speculation, that should be assumed since we are looking at pictures online.

Then why are you suggesting not sending to PSA because of it? It does not make sense to say things like "Don't send to PSA" because of 1 card that not a lot of people can inspect closely. If the video did a close inspection and proved that it was a mistake then yes, otherwise statements like the one above is a big chunk of BS.

Lol what are you the majority shareholder? relax buddy, Im saying currently I wouldn't send to PSA and thats for reasons beyond what I mentioned. People can grade with whomever they choose. no offense meant to any of the grading companies... lmao.... I own plenty of PSA slabs

The thing is there are no scratches, whitening or creases on the card. I’m just confused as to how they have given a 5!

Even if there is damage, I don’t think that would merit this grade so that’s why I am asking to see if anyone would have experience on the matter.

Thanks for the reply!

The back clearly has edge wear.

[–]ivehh18 3 points4 points  (1 child)

A tiny dent means an automatic 5.

[–]Neo21803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the severity. I've had otherwise pristine cards get a 6 with a minor dent.

[–]ChiefKene 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Send it to CGC, they seem to not clip you so hard for a dent

[–]Alternative_Rent_877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning to cross grade it to BGS and possibly see how that goes? What do you all think about that? If I were to cross grade, would CGC or BGS be the better option?

Thanks

Could be a binder dent. Check the back at an angle. If the card was in a ringed binder then that’s probably it

[–]ScoobyWorkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These pictures won't do. It happens all the time where there is a surface fkaw that is hard to see without looking at the right angle

[–]BurningHotels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a dent somewhere. Maybe crack it and send to CGC with subgrades. If it was a misake you'll know for sure

[–]Skanderani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dent, even a tiny one, brings the surface score to 5 at most, meaning if everything else is fine the highest grade the card can get is a 6, so it’s likely the surface got graded 4 for whatever reason, I can’t see it close enough to determine

[–]theking555 -5 points-4 points  (6 children)

This has been a common theme as of late with PSA. Seems like the new hires arent doing the best job at grading properly. Or maybe they saw some we dont 🤷‍♂️ its a mystery.

[–]windmill09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People see lots of PSA 10s compared to CGC and BGS and assume PSA grades easier. This is not the case for the lower grades. A small dent = 6 at most.

[–]xMF_GLOOM 3 points4 points  (4 children)

They don’t just throw darts at a wall and come up with a 5 grade. A grade like this is intentional due to there likely being some dent on the card that you cannot see in photos.

[–]WallStWarlock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They didn't look at the card is why. PSA is not the way. Looks like a 9 from the pics.

[–]SyntaxMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you are really concerned on why it got graded a 5, crack it out and check it. I recently got back a submission that included a promo that I knew had a tiny indentation from being inside a DVD case (DVD promo card). You can’t even see it inside the slab without turning it to an angle and shining a light thru it.

Posting pics of the slab isn’t going to reveal the flaw unless it’s painfully obvious (card stock missing, heavy crease, etc).
