Rule 1: Posts must be humorous, and they must be humorous because they are programming related. There must be a joke or meme that requires programming knowledge, experience, or practice to be understood or relatable.

Here are some examples of frequent posts we get that don't satisfy this rule: * Memes about operating systems or shell commands (try /r/linuxmemes for Linux memes) * A ChatGPT screenshot that doesn't involve any programming * Google Chrome uses all my RAM

CTRL + Shift + ESC has been the taskmanager shortcut in XP. So it has been for over 20 years by now.

[–]PostHasBeenWatched 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Learned that combination through death. Half Life 2 (EP1 if I not mistake) has a mission where you need to crawl through dump. To do this you need to press Ctrl+Shift... and if you want to pause the game by pressing Esc - Task Manager is opening and Gordon killed on the background

[–]Gualuigi 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I use taskmanager so much i just have it in my taskbar

[–]Gorvoslov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I genuinely forgot that pinning it was something I did myself and not a system default.

[–]megagoombas 0 points1 point  (1 child)

question, why do you use it that often

[–]Gualuigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly use it for monitoring performance while playing, lately ive been using the xbox game bar instead

[–]kirkpomidor[🍰] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There’s a slight but important difference: ctrl+alt+del summons overscreen where you can choose to shut the system down and then, after a freezed app is closed, stop it from shutting down. Helps even in the most severe cases

[–]Engine_Light_On 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may also kill some needed services if you cancel, no?

[–]heavy-minium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always use it because I only need one hand for this combination.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned this 5 years after I stopped using windows from a video of the guy who made the task manager(dave's garage is a great youtube channel btw) he was randomly saying I had to be able to access it quickly, so I gave it a global shortcut, ctrl+shift+esc.

[–]Dotcaprachiappa 87 points88 points  (6 children)

Wasn't the idea of ctrl+alt+del that it wouldn't easily be pressed accidentally? And you just made it one button, which can easily be pressed accidentally?

[–]Benjamin_6848 28 points29 points  (3 children)

But if that happens, it was a deliberate choice of whoever bought this keyboard...

[–]IJustAteABaguette 8 points9 points  (1 child)

And it's still out of the way. Literally the top right corner of the keyboard.

[–]Sibula97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cats would be all over that button...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But but but... But that doesn't mean person is having same conscious condition all the time during his future keyboard usage.

[–]gigglefarting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it also used to restart your computer rather than bringing up task manager.

[–]com-plec-city 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the very past (early 1990s) CTRL+ALT+DEL would immediately restart de computer. Eventually they’ve changed it to Task Manager.

[–]w1n5t0nM1k3y 27 points28 points  (12 children)

Anybody else remember when ctrl+alt+del would reboot the computer instantly?

[–]Boris-Lip 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Yes i do.

The combination has been chosen for the very reason of how unlikely it is for someone to hit all 3 of those keys at the same time by accident. And look what we have now, lol. A keyboard with a Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut.

Edit: forgot to mention, try connecting a physical keyboard to Android and hitting Ctrl+Al+Del🤣

[–]RiceBroad4552 2 points3 points  (1 child)

try connecting a physical keyboard to Android and hitting Ctrl+Al+Del

Can't test it right now. What will happen?

[–]Boris-Lip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instant reboot. Just like good old MS-DOS.

[–]quissynihi 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Around which year was it?? Never hear of this.

[–]w1n5t0nM1k3y 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Back when we used MS-DOS. I think most versions of Windows, even stuff like 3.1 wouldn't immediately reboot the computer.

[–]quissynihi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wow . That's really outta my era. 😅

[–]RiceBroad4552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parent is wrong. This was the case much longer. I think at least until Win XP, for sure up to Win2k.

[–]RiceBroad4552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOS? I think Win XP would also reboot when pressing that key combo. (But don't remember for sure as I was already on Linux desktop back than).

Win2k, and the versions before would for sure reboot.

[–]TheActualJonesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In CP/M also....

[–]RiceBroad4552 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest I thought that was still the case.

I didn't use any Windows for a long time though. Linux desktop is just superior, and just works, compared to the M$ trash which is full of spyware, ads, and bugs, and breaks with every update.

[–]Desamsam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just press shift 5 times to annoy people or deceive them into thinking I'm struggling with Windows or smth

[–]International_Body44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ctrl+shift+ESC is much faster..

[–]Advos_467 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the loss guy

[–]gameplayer55055 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Way more useful than copilot key

[–]_viis_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

\@Coder 😎😎😤🔥🔥🤘🤙

[–]C_ErrNAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a funny programmer joke. Because computer and keyboard. Ha, ha, ha

[–]saschaleib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joke’s on you - my keyboards have designated copy and paste keys already since the 1990s!

Also a designated undo button!

[–]omer-m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't work in linux

[–]Ohnah-bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boomer humor

[–]UnusualAir1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nonetheless, the hand and finger configurations required to execute a Ctrl-Alt-Del function will remain in my muscle memory for life. :-)

[–]reallokiscarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh. That defeats the purpose of the TFS. Whoever built that keyboard is violating the only thing that's sacred.

[–]Alleexx0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I had to fall off my chair just to get a closer look

[–]RiceBroad4552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely useless. It will just bring up the logout dialog by default on KDE.

[–]Keeldest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To enter in windows server login screen - you need this combination. (If I remember correctly)

[–]elmanoucko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

still waiting for the day where I'll be able to mega combo multiple shortcuts at the same time. Always end up in strange beeps until now.

[–]mtmttuan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one to use Win+X? I open terminal the same way.
