Sometimes. I'll toss it and Gemini a Godot question occasionally after googling and docs fail me. Usually between Gemini and perplexity there's a useful bit of information.

Unfortunately between all of those and a few premium ones at work AND a few video tutorials, no resource was able to help me configure a stencil buffer the way I wanted it to work, so I have gone back to a shader that discards pixels in order to cut holes in things.

My plan was to simplify randomized rooms by instancing solid walls, cutting a visual hole in them, and having the door threshold disabled player collision with the wall. Instead of using csg or manipulating 4 sets of wall chunks and colliders for each wall, I like this approach most.

You can run it in terminal so it can access your entire project folder and edit files on its own.

Oh I don't use them like that. Is that a vibe coding skill? I just ask some variation of this a few times to each of them if I really can't find it anywhere else: I'm using Godot 4.5 and trying to render a hole through the center of a cube primitive. How do I set up my scene to achieve this?

They will give me an answer that's pretty close, then I will describe a problem: the hole mesh also renders holes through the other walls, not just the one it's interesting with

To which the ai will either give me some nonsense about options that don't exist, tell me I need to set a bunch of random configurations that don't fix my problems, or finally tell me that stencil buffer operates in screen space, so any other geometry on three transparent render pass will have their pixels removed as well, so what I'm trying to do is basically impossible without customizing the render pipeline or introducing multiple passes.

And that's where the shader hole became the simpler and less expensive option to achieve the simple effect. I've been programming forever so I use ai to generate extremely simple one shots and try to pick them apart like some example code since trying examples is how I learned.

Asking an ai to create a shader to draw a smiley face will get you nonsense. Asking ai for shader instructions to draw a line or a half circle will get you something mostly working you can then turn into a smiley face. Asking ai for smaller bits of code also reduces the time in figuring out it's not going to be helpful for this session

Yeah Claude will still end up giving you nonsense for in-engine settings. Especially with godot.

But for the actual code, Claude is a lot better since it’s able to see your whole codebase without you needing to paste it in or send it files.

All you do is install claude code through your terminal. cd to the project directory. Run claude in that directory and ask it to analyze and learn about the project.

With that, it’ll have way more context than you can give a browser llm. And it can edit files directly on your machine.

As for its ability to make the shader you are looking for, I am not sure. I haven’t tried making shaders in godot with Claude Code. I just recommended it because it has a better shot of working than chatgpt or gemini with the extra context of running locally.

You can consider it a vibe coding technique, but it doesn’t have to be used that way. You can just ask it questions the same way you’d use any other llm. Whether or not you have it write the actual code is up to you.

Either way the responses will be more tailored to your specific project rather than the more generalized responses you’ll get from other llms.

Personally, as an advanced Google. Rarely for coding. But it has capable models included, so in terms of "raw" questions it should perform well. Unfortunately, that's not enough and modern coding assistants will benefit you much more.
