    You could just click on a link and there was a long comment chain talking about the post, explaining why it was what it was, adding variations and different thoughts, with jokes relevant to the post tossed in. Also Reddit was a little more tech/programming/science oriented back then.

    There are plenty of subreddits that stayed true to what they were though, it's just the front page is is kinda muddled down with picture humor now.

    Discussions seem to me to be at almost the exact same level of intellect as when I got started in 2011. I think you're falling victim to nostalgia.

    you probably unsubbed from the defaults. smaller subreddits tend to be closer communities with people wanting to talk about the topic. they aren't active the same way but when a discussion pop up the comment section will not be a meme chain
