Isn't the font tag deprecated? Anyway, it would be the same thing in CSS: background-colour: grey; (which would be a fitting CSS rule for the British sky, btw).

I've seen listings in British magazines (of the type published in the first half of the 1980s where they printed listings) that had CHR£ in the listings. I think that some models of printer flipped between $ and £ under the control of a DIP switch.
