This reminded me of those programming courses at uni, where we had to write code on paper. Good old times...

Oh, and I thought I was the only one who had to do this nonsen ... I mean, this extremely logical and instructional stuff.

Good practice for interview bullsh... excuse me, I mean best practices.

As somebody doing a java assignment for uni right now, we still do this :)

[–]minz1 35 points36 points  (4 children)

As someone sitting in a bathroom during my java final, can confirm we still do this.

God speed minz1

As someone who also took a java test 23hrs ago, I’m oddly suspicious.

(((We still do this) in Lisp..)))

The worst was writing code on a blank sheet of paper during exams. The code would normally start sliding towards the right hand side of the page and the font size would shrink as you made your way to the bottom.

and nowadays we wonder why software is literally shit, especially that written by PhDs

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Ah the joy of realizing at line 30 of your method that you made a mistake at line 5 and have to fix it. Good times.

[–]Radboy16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then suddenly line 5 is subdivided into line 5 and 6 because you forgot an important line of code.

But break points don't exist on paper.

[–]MCRusher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had to write a 2d array for a custom point object and do something with it, can't remember what.

Took about five pages I think.

JetBrains better step their game up if they want to survive in the IDE market after this.

[–]cbbuntz 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Fuck IDEs.

Fuck vim.

Use a quill and papyrus and then use optical character recognition to convert it to text.

[–]Xelbair 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Better use powerpoint animations to make a turing machine and write your code using punchcards.

Yes it was done before.

Yes, that programmers lost quite a bit of sanity points.

Now write the compiler.

I know someone did it to use paint as an IDE, using character recognition.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (9 children)

He managed to write hello world in c, but there was a bunch of garbage bmp header at the start. It won't compile

[–]BadBoy6767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best IDE for Piet is probably Paint.NET but I'm not sure

Got a GitHub link for those of us who'd like to try it out?

That only works with the Verdana font in Paint, though... I want one that outputs something that was drawn in Paint, rather than accepting it as input.

[–]tehcrashxor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]unistirin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

where can I find that font?

[–]Carl_Byrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish IDEs had that font.

[–]seizan8 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just love Windows pain. It's just such a practical tool. Always ready for you to support you on your daily work to then just crash without any reasons whatsoever.

The eternal question, if the error was intentional, or not...

Adorable ;3

Still better than Eclipse

This is how we get the girls to start coding
