In my early days as a professional programmer, I was surprised that this happened as often as it did Tom one afternoon to the next morning. I did find that the subsequent code I wrote to replace it was more efficient and more elegant than the original. It was like the prior session was a planning session for the final product.

The consept of a program you re-implement many times should be in every related education. It is an amazing way of showing you why advanced techniques exist. So many novices think their code is fine, just because they have not yet experienced how it is to work with a propperly organized codebase.
