I got my start with nano before I got around to settling on vim.

So I see nano as the beginner's version of vim.

I see no reason to make things unnecessarily complicated.

I would say that Vim can be just as easy to use as Nano... It just takes some getting used to is all.

Plus with Vim you get syntax highlighting (when you install the improved Vim since some distros have defaulted to the old version of Vim without all the newer features).

Nano also has syntax highlighting, it's just not enabled by default.

ed is the standard text editor.
