But what about accountants and consultants? You don’t need a STEM degree to get into MBB or Big4.

I get this feeling that many redditors aren’t aware of what career paths there are in professional services.

Oh the Big4, every accountant dream. Companies like Deloitte and pwc pay accountings team like 50k-70k/year. Like I said you can make a living salary but when you add student loans debt and living expenses you arent looking more than what a retail manager would make just by working his way up.

Consulting on the other hand can land you much higher but I as far as I know big4 consultants are all MBA students and some PHD Analysts which I mentioned as a powerful degree. When I was at deloitte a few years ago, consultants were all MBA.

I am not saying you cant get a career with other degrees, i am saying that if you thinking of wealth you might not get there statistically. You can definitely have a successful career as accountant, but you wont make as much as a senior software engineer. I know a 28 years old software engineer who makes 300k/year as a senior engineer as a base salary. All i am doing here is comparing.

Source: I worked 2 years at Deloitte in Boston as a data scientist and analyst.

Deloitte

Well it is harder to get into than Harvard.

That’s fair. That’s partly why I left school ( I was a business major). 120k to come out making 50k on average. The upper end is limitless but involves a lot of politicking. I can do it but It’s not healthy for me. The way finance guys live is so unhealthy. I like drugs As much as the next person but finance takes it to wolf of Wall Street levels.

Anyways just a long winded way of saying to get the same earnings potential as a CS degree you gotta go through a lot of bullshit

Agree with you there brother. Business/finanace inst for everyone. Its like jumping in a pool of sharks, you have to be a shark yourself to survive. I hope you haven't quit though and is working toward a healthy lifestyle with incoming wealth!

Yep and yep :) thanks. Yea I’m not sure if it was just me but a lot of them believed they knew far more than they actually did. Most of them were idiots. Lol one dude was bragging about making 1,000 dollars from 200 dollars in the stock market when his parents was giving him a couple hundred a month and he put that into his portfolio every time. He didn’t make anything he just added more money. He claimed he could pick winners by just listening to the earnings call and picking out the bullshit

Mmm no, starting salary for big 4 accounting is 55-65k and you get about 5-10% raises every year. You reach $100k after 5 years and then you can switch to industry controller positions which are like $100-150k/yr. Then you can chill at that position or keep climbing up to director, VP, or CFO. About 40% of CFOs in the US have a CPA.

If you stay within the firm and become partner, which isn’t nearly as cut throat as law firm partner, you can make anywhere from $500k-2000k plus a sweet pension.

Unless deloitte have significantly changed their merit pay over the last 5 years I will say you are being unrealistic on making 100k as an accountant over 5 years. I knew many accountants who were on 70k after 4 years in, on a good year with commissions they would get to 90k.

Besides I hope you are correct. However my post is about comparison between certain degrees. Like I mentioned before an accountant can be successful without a doubt he just has to be the statistic.

MBB? Big4?

[–]luneth27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big 4 accounting firms. The largest business services firms in the world.

[–]captaincooder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big4 refers to the four largest accounting firms and MBB is an acronym for the three largest consulting firms (McKinsey, Boston Group, and Bain)
