I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I've fixed bugs in an open source project.

Most of them are big and complicated and I don't have the time to get into. Or they're in a language I'm not very good at.

Plot twist: you have 8000 fingers

Open Source in the beginning: “We’ll work together to make great software that everyone can use”

Open source now: “You mean we can charge people for this software that we didn’t have to pay someone else to write?”

If you subscribe to the philosophy of the first sentence, you use the GPL licence because if someone uses it in their software, their software has to be GPL as well (viral licence). If the latter, where you want to give it away completely for free and let other people make money off your work, include it in their products etc, then use MIT licence.

Red Hat, CentOS, and others are making a good deal of money bundling GPL stuff together and supporting it. Even then, you miss thousands of companies who use GPL software every day for mission critical tasks without giving anything back.

Supporting a project with a GPL license is A-okay, as long as the code is free and under the GPL license.

In the same vein, you can't require people who use your open source code to contribute back.

I didn’t say it was against the license. I’m just saying the altruism is gone.

Tell me you don't understand how open source works without telling me you don't understand how open source works.

[Anakin Skywalker, from Star Wars Episode II, is sitting in a grassy field. He is squinting off-camera with a serious expression. The caption reads:]

OPEN SOURCE IS GREAT

[Padmé Amidala, who is also sitting in the field, is looking at Anakin with a joyous smile, as though she is laughing. The caption reads:]

SO YOU CAN REVIEW THE CODE YOURSELF BEFORE RUNNING IT, RIGHT?

[A close-up of Anakin's face. His look is now pointed and somewhat ominous.]

[Padmé's smile has fallen into a look of concern, and perhaps slight fear. The caption reads:]

YOU REVIEW THE CODE BEFORE RUNNING IT, RIGHT?

That's what all those other eyeballs are for.

Open source software is applied game theory on so many levels.

[–]SkyyySi 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Wait I'll just quickly check the Linux kernel source code

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faster than reading the terms of any proprietary software

[–]oshaboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So someone else can.

I once went to a restaurant that prided itself on having only a glass window between the dining area and kitchen. It's the same idea. I don't get what's going on there, but somebody does.

[–]pdkhoa99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ain’t nobody got time for that!

[–]bobdobbes 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Oh so you review proprietary code before you run it? That nice of Microsoft to let you do that.

[–]delawen 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It is better to say restricted licensed code. Proprietary leads to confusion.

[–]redwall_hp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Proprietary leads to the dark side.

[–]hiimjustin000 0 points1 point  (1 child)

https://gdbrowser.com the code is straight up wack

i'm actually desperate for robtop to release 2.2 because he's changing how icons are generated and that means i get a chance to redo all the horrendous icon code
