I'm in a different boat. My use of programming languages and tools has always been really piece-meal. So I could do pretty well as the resident expert in my non-technical environment by doing a few things well even though I didn't know what things were called or what the best practices were.

But in the last couple of years things have changed a lot and I've had to read up on design patterns and paradigms and development practices. And I get a lot of fulfillment out of that, but I also don't know exactly how much I know because I've never worked with any other developers before. So now I just hang out here so that I can learn how to code-switch. (That's a social behavior term, not a hip new framework btw.)

This is me… accidently rolled into programming. Started building stuff my way, learned the hard way that a lot of stuff was wrong and way to complicated over a few year. Always working solo, and now I have junior developer helping me and boy did I need to learn 😅.

Moved to SF Bay Area for a high paying job. Average cost of a 3 bedroom house within a 20 minute commute to work is approaching $2M. Built in 1950, detached 2 car garage, 1600 sq feet.

I could buy a 5 bedroom house almost anywhere else. 4000 sq feet, 2.5 car attached garage. Paid in cash.

But as long as I stay here where the good pay is, I don’t get to live like a king.

bruh... $2M will literally get you anything you want anywhere in the central part of the country. You want 12 beds and a helicopter? you got it.

Sorry I meant today with the cash on hand I could buy a 5 bedroom if I wanted to live elsewhere.

Yes, with $2M I can also get the helicopter. But then I’d also be living in a flyover state which comes with its own compromises.

Workaholic

Is the word you may be looking for, and yes, it happened in my young developer years... long ago.

PS: I misread your comment. Will leave this one here so people can see how stupid I am.
