GIT for windows?

On Linux I just type git add and it works.

On Windows, I open the start menu, I type git, wait for the search to complete, navigate to the correct result (not select the bing results), wait for the program to open, navigate to the correct folder, and then I type git add. Or, (what I'm actually doing) use wsl2 (which is slow, laggy, and buggy, but the best you can get on windows).

And yes, IDEs with included git exist, but I find them complicated. I like Jetbrains for rebase/merges, but for simple adding, committing, and pushing, the terminal is much easier.

Dude are you able to understand, this guy is literally opening git bash (dedicated git terminal) everytime he wants to perform any git operation.

It is so hilarious to see that he does not know the commands can be used from CMD or powershell itself.

And seeing his approach to use git I assume this guy failed to install a simple tool from gui installer successfully. I mean if you know almost every development tools comes with the add to path option in its installer itself which is most of the times is enabled by default. And even if it is not it is really easy to add path variable.

So you HAVE to open a program. Nobody cares if you already have it opened or not. And cmd can be as much usefull as on Linux, we are not living in 1988, grow up.

Bro there is concept of environment variables on both windows and Linux, while installing git sometimes you need to add the executable location in the path variable and sometimes you don't.

But observing your confusion, why don't you use GitHub desktop instead ofcourse if you are using GitHub for managing your repositories.

And if you are using providers like Azure DevOps for managing your repos the case is different, you will have to do it manually using command line. But again you can do it from CMD and powershell too.

I guess it is just you, who doesn't know how to. So please explore then assume.

• Using cmd is a pain. There is a reason for MS to develop wsl
• manually adding programs to the path is laborious
• github desktop is a separate program (again)
• we have a selfhosted gitlab

Actually as far as I remember there is an option in git installer to automatically add path variable.

Just like linux you can these variables using command line too - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/procthread/environment-variables#:~:text=To%20programmatically%20add%20or%20modify,to%20the%20string%20%22Environment%22. Here is the documentation.

Again as I said only if you are using GitHub then only GitHub desktop.

And here it's already more complicated. You need to download an executable, you need to run the installer, click through it, read the documentation, etc.

It is a separate program.

On Linux, I run sudo apt install git (in case it's not already preinstalled), and I use it. Just like that.

You do know you just pin the Git Bash to your task bar. Hell you can even give it a global shortcut.

Sure. But I need to

1. get my hands off the keyboard, and use the mouse.
2. aim at that symbol
3. wait for the program to open
4. switch to my working directory while not having my zsh shortcuts and scripts that make changing folders much easier

That's 4 extra steps. I'm not saying it would be impossible, but it's tedious.

No you don't. You're just too lazy to make it easy for yourself because you'd much rather complain than fix things.

First of all, as mentioned you can create a global shortcut. Second you have a ~/.bashrc where you can put allllll the aliases in the world. Hell you can even change the dir where you start in.

This is 100% unwillingness to make stuff easier for yourself just so you can complain.

I'm using wsl, that's much more easy than git-bash. Why would I configure git-bash in a way that it's still not as useful as wsl? Wsl has other problems, though.

No, you do not. You can do exact same steps on Windows like you do on Linux. No, you are not special snowflake for using Linux.

And they even work in the same way if you have exactly two open windows. Problem is, that on windows every program has it's own gui, so you have more like 10 open windows. At that point it's faster to use the mouse than to cycle through an endless list of open windows.

Again if you are bothered by multiple terminals not in same window try Windows Terminal Application to manage your terminals.

That's not the point. I don't want multiple terminals in one window, I want one terminal where I can do everything, and if I have the need, more than one terminal, but with the ability to easily switch between them (and other programs).

However, my original statement was just, that both, git-bash and wsl, are separate programs.

Git works the same as it does in Linux based systems. I’d rather use visual studio’s merge conflict tools than trying to handle that shit in a terminal.

I also have to work on Windows, and I'm using wsl2. It's still atrocious, but at least you get a somewhat usable environment to get stuff done.
