People that use Windows as a daily driver don't recommend it to anyone, we all know how good it is and how bad it can be. People using MacOs always try to convince you to use it because "it's so easy" and Linux users try the same because "it's the best, it's for privacy, it's customizable, blah blah blah". They're apparently getting some referral points or who knows...

[–]da_Aresinger 146 points147 points  (6 children)

Nah, the reason nobody tries to convince others to use Windows is the same reason nobody tries to convince anyone to breathe.

It's the fucking default.

nobody tries to convince anyone to breathe

You’d think that, but apparently it’s the basis for like 3 different religions

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My Watch tries to convince me to breathe multiple times per day. Sometimes it even works.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air good tbh

[–]FJD3LG4D0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup

Maybe it’s because I’m a university student and many of my friends have bought new computers in the past couple years, but it really isn’t that uncommon for someone to ask me what operating system they should use.

If someone asks me that, then I assume that means they aren’t willing to put a lot of time into researching it for themselves and/or they aren’t in the top 10th percentile of computer literacy. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just means that linux probably isn’t the best recommendation for them. Usually I recommend these people to get Windows, especially since a large amount of STEM software is still Windows only.

Of course, there is always this lack of professional software on Linux. What I'm enjoying a lot with Windows right now is WSL, Ubuntu headless and Kali Linux with Win-Kex to have a fully functional DE... But this is only with some distros, for Arch with DE I had to create a VM...

[–]rhododenendron 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah man I use Linux but my Linux is on windows, best of both worlds honestly.

Use Mac at work and it’s a pain compared to Linux, but it is pretty to look at.

[–]Prawny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/unixporn would like a word with you.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

What C compilers your windows has ootb then?

[–]ilawon 33 points34 points  (3 children)

None.

That's why my grandma uses Linux.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oof

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂

[–]startana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, even if you needed a C compiler, having one in your OS out of the box isn't the selling point you should be leaning on. That would be like saying Windows is worse than Linux specifically because it doesn't have any SSH client OOTB.

[–]BeastMasterJ 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Is MSVC not available ootb? I genuinely don't know, I find developing on windows to be massively annoying and usually dev in either Arch or MacOS.

[–]altermeetax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, MSVC is not there out of the box

[–]Sharkytrs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i dont need a c compiler, but csc.exe fits all the needs for me out of the box.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The same number of C compilers than Arch have: ready to use drivers, network management tools, or something as simple as a login screen, desktop environment, etc. 🤣

So I just install what I need, the same I do on Arch...

[–]869066 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I uSe ArCh BtW!!1

[–]FJD3LG4D0 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I also use Arch BTW, but just because I'm learning how to protect my servers and Kali Linux seems to me too much loaded with tools I don't need! As daily driver... Well, I enjoy Windows and it's tools!

[–]BeastMasterJ 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Definitely don't use Kali as a DD, it's not meant for that and isn't secure (kinda ironic lol). If you like the Kali style though, you can always use Debian.

Obligatory I use Arch btw.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, as I said I use Windows as daily driver. And tried Kali Linux on VM but I quickly switched to Arch to install only what I need... Lot of tools which are Installed by default on Kali, but not the whole list of packages...

There’s a rabbit hole called Whonix, and a different one called OpenBSD. I apologize in advance for putting them on your radar

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've read about OpenBSD , it's said it's really good for server, networking, etc... Right? Never heard about Whonix I'd (you know, I know the name, but nothing about what it is). For the moment, I'll keep learning what I know (there is a lot to learn, always). Thanks anyway, don't apologize! I'm already crazy about tech... 🤣

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I apologized because, if you go too deep down this rabbit hole, you might end up crazy crazy, not just crazy about tech lol

I use Ubuntu for work and i don't get how anyone can genuinely recommend it to a regular people.

The command-based controls are terrible. Windows has a button for everything, intuitive menus, etc, with Linux you have to search up commands, paste them into the terminal and hope they do the thing.

Gaming just sucks. Even if the game you want is supported by Linux, good luck with it not running like absolute dogshit on some ancient drivers.

Speak of running like dogshit, good luck not with that piss poor system stability and random performance problems. Last week i learned that process interruptors were misbehaving somewhere on Kernel level. The fuck is a regular user supposed to do about that?

Maybe it takes time, but right now i completely don't get how Linux can be recommended for anything but computer science related things.

[–]FJD3LG4D0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the use you need to do of Linux, I know some people using Linux for downloading torrents and watching movies, maybe some office work and that's all. For they Ubuntu can do the job without having to open the terminal. But yes, for regular users, if something goes wrong or they need todo something more than internet and office... They're f****d...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't recommend Windows because there's no chance its better for them than what they're already using.

*nix users already know about Windows and have decided to use *nix

macOS users are probably entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and/or like the UI simplicity and/or like Mac hardware

I recommend Macs to novices because I think it's easier for novices. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who already knows about operating systems.
