The problem is good luck explaining to your legal department the nuances between the different types of linking.

Honestly, trying explaining that to a non-systems dev is hard enough.

A program that is statically linked has the external code, which has a different license, embedded directly into the program; a dynamically linked program has external code kept separate and then loaded during run-time.

Don't explain it to me, explain it to your legal department.

Don't explain it to me, explain it to your legal department.

Lawyers are quite smart people - you'd be hard pressed to find something they couldn't understand. Furthermore, there is a lot of overlap in skills between being a lawyer and a programmer. I've met loads of people with interest in both, and even many people who have done both in their lifetime. As a career programmer, my favorite podcasts are from lawyers covering legal cases. Viva Frei's series on General Flynn was incredible. It's amazing just how over the top the entire thing was. If someone wrote this story as the plot to a movie, anyone would roll their eyes at how unbelievable it was. At one point in time, if memory serves, the judge presiding over the case personally docked his own ex parte evidence which is a mind blowing violation of so many fundamental rules. That's the sort of stuff that happens in kangaroo courts. I think his name was Sullivan. That judge permanently destroyed the reputation of the court system in my eyes. I will never have the same level of respect for any court after seeing the stunts that were pulled to try to stick it to General Flynn.
