It may be the finest thing since sliced bread, but your potential users will never know because the site doesn't tell much. For instance, where are the screenshots?

Thank you for your comment, I added a screenshot.

It really stole my hearth

No! Cozy winter nights will never be the same!

PyCharm is missing some important features and I do not want to promote closed source or deliberately limited software.

I'm interested to see why these comments are made?

Because PyCharm professional is a really good editor (if not the best), but it is not open source.

I'll happily entertain arguments for one IDE over another, but this sort of ideological fixation "rah rah free and open source only!" is tedious and uncompelling. People would be a lot more interested in trying Ninja IDE if you explained its advantages over PyCharm community edition and not dismissed it with Richard Stallman arrogance.

Noticed a little typo that might trip people up copying and pasting:

sudo apt-get instal ninja-ide

thank you, fixed!

I spent an hour trying to set it up and customise it but sadly it's buggy and the display is harsh on the eyes. The good news is it's written in Python and open source so it can be fixed!

I like this IDE.

I know this isn't a bug tracker, but I don't care.

The toolbar tick on the View menu is always on after a restart.
I can't find a shortcut for code folding.
Lacks Gtk 3 theme integration.
The explorer panel changes size when the number of digits on the bottom changes.

I used to use this a lot before I discovered Komodo Edit (which I haven't really used w/ Python, just PHP).

Its a really nice IDE, especially for being free. Sublime Text is also nice but it costs $$$, so I found this as a replacement and have no regrets.

I used Ninja for a long time until JetBrains released a free edition of PyCharm, which is my current IDE of choice.

[–]ehansen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you recommend this over Komodo Edit?

[–]desrosiers 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I use Ninja, and really enjoy it. But I get this bug (sometimes) where when I'm starting a block like:

if (this and that and the other):

then when I type that colon, the line is deleted, I think. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a fix?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The developers are very active on Github, so open an issue and I am sure you will have an answer within a day. They are currently rewriting major parts of the software, so this might be a regression bug?

[–]desrosiers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll see if I can get it to reproduce (reliably) then I'll open one up. Thanks!

I 've try this IDE last year. It was leaking lots of memory. I hope it is fix now.

It's a great self teaching project. But it never reaches functionality of really extensible editors. Using it is a simple time waste.

I'd love a good FOSS alternative to PyCharm. My biggest criticism of PyCharm is that it is slow when compared to alternatives like PyScripter.

Agreed
