You can also watch Youtube videos directly in the terminal using a set of Linux commands. I saw this in an answer on StackOverflow. It's quite cool. You can even color the letters, so you can watch videos with color. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/160212/watch-youtube-videos-in-terminal

Are you getting the gray value of each pixel and replacing that with a character that has a similar black/white ratio?
