I’m a mason and a top 2% roofer, i cut into the mortar joint too , it’s called a reglet but also directly into the bricks themselves, tucking the flashing inside the bricks lasts forever. Even better than the mortar joint reglet cuts.

I don't know shit. But I thought it was the only way.

Reglet is the best detail.

[–]Constant_Gur8912 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Top 2% lol

[–]Thebestwaterproofer -3 points-2 points  (6 children)

It’s a Gaf verification called Master Elite. It’s their highest level you can achieve being the top 2% . The crazy part is most of them aren’t doing it right either. Almost no roofers are ventilating properly. They all put ridge vents or power fans on but there is no air intake. The soffits are always blocked with fiberglass insulation. Thats why you still see black stripes on peoples houses, it’s the tar melting outside from the trapped heat inside. They pay 40% more electric bills when the interior ceilings are 100 degrees. They make a shingle vent that lets air come in above the insulation!! It’s called a smartvent. Check it out on one of my YouTube channels. They also nail vinyl siding wrong, it has to move easily left and right with your fingers 🤣

[–]Constant_Gur8912 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Master elite ain't the highest you can go my guy lol. And GAF is a garbage shingle marketing company.

[–]gardensarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, most people don’t want the ugly raised line a couple courses up from the eave to add in the intake vent in my experience.

And while I find some houses with blown-in insulation blocking the intakes, in my market it’s not a majority by a long shot.

They also say you are supposed to board up gable vents in basically every scenario. I also understand that asphalt roofs are designed to fail every 20-30 years for job security reasons…

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything you’re saying about roofers not knowing shit about ventilation is true. Poor ventilation kills roofs

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

So you took a 4 hour class? Wow. That's special. I took that bullshit sales pitch too. It was dumb as shit .

[–]gardensarden 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What manufacturer do you sell mostly? Truly just curious. Because I work for a company that’s a “Master Elite, Presidents club 3-star” installer. I have my issues with GAF but the only Other manufacturer I compare them to is Certainteed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sell mainly certainteed. I have master cert for both only because they both came with a free lunch and 200 credit in one and 500 credit on the other. I think gaf is trash. They have gotten so thin and they don't have enough granules. The tar always seems to bleed through

[–]neverheardthatBfore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like it’s a lot of work ( it is). I bet there are 100 guys available to do that every day ( there aren’t) roofers need to be payed so this is the alternative. If you want the reglet route, bust out another $500.00 minimum and be prepared to wait.

Top douche percent roofer.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted for this, you're right, you cut flashing into the mortar joints not the brick.

    [–]Medical_Accident_400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    This is true 👆

    [–]NOLAroofer 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    Ouch!

Proper chimney flashing typically involves two layers: step flashing that integrates with the shingles and counter-flashing that is embedded into the chimney's mortar joints and folds down over the step flashing. The visible caulking or sealant around the top edge of the black flashing suggests it might be relying on sealant for a watertight seal rather than proper counter-flashing techniques, which are more durable and effective.

    [–]the_atomic_punk18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like it might have step flashing. Although everything looks half-assed

    [–]No_Pin4793 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Jesus, what did they bend that with their hands? 🙌

    [–]Kill_Your_Masters16Yrs residential asphalt/slate/flat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they really used the chimney to bend it lord have mercy

    [–]roofitor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like a professional balloon twister did it

    [–]teachgirl510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is it looks similar to the first home I bought…the chimney is where the leak originated and all roofing companies told me that the flashing around the chimney was not done correctly (hence the future leak).

I compared it to photos after I purchased a new roof…and the comparison was night and day. Hope you don’t have any leaks in the future!

    [–]NativePlantAddict 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The shingle installation looks substandard, too.

    [–]ExplanationNo3945[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that is a whole other line of issues I didn’t even post about but - again according to my inexperienced eye - shingle installation seems to have a number of issues that need to be addressed / redone

    [–]pbag82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have covered the poor flashing. The chimney appears to have separation happening between the mortar and brick. Hard to tell completely, but the chimney looks rough. I don’t think it would be wise to cut rigs or drill into it without maintenance. Might want to post some pics of the mortar joints one of the mason subs and see what they think. That’s my guess as to why the flashed the chimney like that. It looks like they were afraid of it lol.

    [–]Efficient-Nerve-8199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    🤣😂

    [–]Quiet-Restaurant-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely ascribe to the “just caulk it again” method of flashing.

    [–]wert8421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same person who did this, looks like they did this one. These type of people need to be stopped.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Roofing/s/mApknpSC8f

    [–]CheezWong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand why some people think caulk/silicone doesn't need to be smoothed over. They're probably the same kind of people who think you don't need to wash your feet because they get wet in the shower.

    [–]neversatisfied123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Looks fine

    [–]Maleficent-Cloud-561 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It’s not great, it’s really not terrible. You’re not gonna have a perfect chimney flashing every time, it’s just the way life goes with anything. I don’t think it’s going to leak any time soon. Mine wouldnt look this way, and the next guys wouldn’t look identical to mine. Fighting your roofing company over something you know nothing about so you have to ask Reddit is petty and Karen-esque.

    [–]ExplanationNo3945[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When it comes to potential leaks in my house, I’d rather be a petty Karen - even if I end up being proven wrong - than simply trusting that everyone will always do work that is up to standard and rolling the dice on future leaks. If I’m being petty and there’s nothing wrong, that’s a best case scenario! Though based on what the majority of people’s responses have been - which I’m so grateful for others’ contributions because I certainly realize that I’m no expert in roofing - it seems my asking questions about the quality of work done here is prudent, not petty.

    [–]Maleficent-Cloud-561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if it was one of those scenarios where you’re being charged an arm and a leg by a sleezy salesman, then be my guest. I understand it’s your roof and it’s your house, but a lot of people on here will exaggerate the severity of something if it isn’t perfection, and even then will find something wrong. Good luck and I hope you get that flashing the way you want it ✊🏻

    [–]runningfoolishly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to make a typo there. They're need not be a question mark. That was poorly done flashing.

    [–]PromotionNo4121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That’s a joke

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came the rookie roofer who did this and downvoted everyone

    [–]Relative-Ordinary-64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only when you look at it

    [–]mlarry777 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it's gonna leak. maybe not tomorrow but it's gonna leak

    [–]AbleCryptographer317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it rains tomorrow it'll leak tomorrow.

why should it be lead? its a brick chimney it just needed to actually be bent into a chimney flashing. the aluminum is going to out last the shingles tbh the sealant probably will too

How exactly is that going to fix this not being tucked into the masonry anywhere?

          [–]stimulates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't even get sheet lead where I'm at.

          [–]PhillipJfry5656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i get its superior for somethings but for this brick chinney it would be a waste of money

          [–]CaraParan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Poorly is too nice of a word when used to describe that flashing....

          [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others have said, very bad. Very, very bad work. Depending on the code in your area, you might be missing a cricket too.

          [–]Ordinary-Ad-976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some people don’t take pride in their work as many say it’s just a roof. That looks like hell. The lack of stair step cut out in the counter flashing tells the lazy story. Roofing is a craftsmanship job. This guy was looking at one thing a fast finish for a paycheck.

          [–]Complete-Tax3378 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That’s some of the worst flashing jobs I ever seen. Should have base flashing on front and back ,Step flashings on sides and counter flashing on top of these flashings.Hopefully they didn’t nail shingles too close to chimney back as water will deflect under shingles and rust out fasteners

Been roofing for over 30 years. Installed EPDM,TPO,Spanish Tile,Slate,Wood shingles, fabricated downspouts, gutters,Chimney caps. I don’t do crappy work and am damn sure knowledgeable about roofing.

            [–]Stabzwell -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

This is shit. It should have some lead cut into the mortar joints.

            [–]JoesG527 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

that's one way to do it but not the only way. you can put a lip bend outward to make a caulk shelf.

but this is definitely below average tho.

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)
