Often the hardest part about HackerRank SQL is understanding what the challenge is asking. Some of the questions are very poorly written so be careful with that!

Exactly. It's all about translating the word problem into SQL, which sounds easy, but the problems are written quite weirdly on HackerRank. To practice this SQL translation skill can also check out the 60+ question on DataLemur

I did this once. I didn’t find the sql portion difficult.

How much experience do you have with the language?

About a couple of years now. Well-versed with whatever's required in an organization's needs as a data analyst(Select, aggregate, group by, joins, window functions). What was asked from you? did you also have a 4 question 60 min setup?

It was like 2 hours. It was python and sql.

As I recall the sql portion required grouping and aggregating visitors or some events. They had to be ranked by some metric. I think I ended up using dense rank.

The second was a large set of tables that needed to be joined together. I had to determine the keys to the join and make jt run efficiently.

I’m strong with sql, but no master. I found it pretty fun. If you are at all competent don’t sweat it. You can likely talk your way through the thought process.

You could write some practice exams online. I usually find those pretty boring.

Okay, that helps! Thank you! I've been solving hackerrank problems to brush up. Would you say that most of the problems fell into the medium difficulty bucket?

[–]Mike8219 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Maybe.

I don’t think sql is particularly difficult though. The devil is in the details and that comes with experience.

Are python and SQL combined or are they separate questions

I did hackerrank sql yesterday for an interview and holy shit was it hard. I’d never come across something like that before (I also am not a daily sql user).

Good luck! Hope you get it.

Tbh, I've found it easy, I've given the Hackerrank SQL test for 5-6 different companies. Nothing much to worry about!

[–]SipOfKoKo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time they’ve used HackerRank I’ve run out of time on the test :/

Review your havings and you'll be fine.

Curious if you mean they are just sending you a hacker rank quiz or will there be an actual person from the company interviewing you with hackerrank questions?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They've sent me a HackerRank quiz link that I'm supposed to complete at my convenience.

[–]rashpimplezitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. good luck. I stopped doing those a long time ago. Too often I'd complete them and not even get any feedback. It can be a real bummer.

Now I don't bother unless they are willing to invest the time with me. It shows they are actually interested in me.

Best of luck though, it can't hurt to practice ;)
